Black hole, bright star’s now dark heart

collapsed upon yourself, sinister dark orb

infinite gravity consuming all, even light

anything that wanders across your path

approaches your ravenous clutches

swirls into your vortex, crushed to nothing

At the edge of your reach, grasping fingers

begin to bend the fabric of time and space

your periphery crossed, retreat is no option

for anything passing within your threshold

you fatally grip, promising only oblivion

This point of no return: the event horizon.

* * *

By chance, I found myself in Monterey for a meeting

you, the brightest star in the room, caught my eye

uncharacteristically bold, I schemed to sit next to you

I recall nothing of the meeting, but I remember our lunch

my heart raced when you suggested dinner together

I readied myself, felt a schoolboy rush presumed dead

Yes, oh yes, I felt it too,

I was drawn to you like a moth to a flame

an instant reaction to your irresistible charm

you awakened my spirit

stirring a new desire within the heart of me

anticipating a divine evening with you

Southward along the Pacific we drove toward Point Sur

to a Greek café and intimate dinner above crashing surf

our waiter thought we were married…to each other

at sunset, we glowed warmly; was it merely the wine?

smiling, laughing easily, your eyes danced in candlelight

by starlight, we shared marital confidences and discord

I couldn't take my eyes off of you as we dined in twilight

the blushing warmth was much more than the wine,

more than quaint conversation, it went much deeper

tripping my senses into a comfort zone of oblivion

yes, celestial forces were pulling my soul within

a dynamic fascination teasing, taunting me to stay

The next day a magical blur, I drove you to the airport

waiting with you, not knowing what came next for us

sadly, I watched your plane disappear into the sunset

you took part of me with you, I missed you instantly

alone, I drove south along the coast, you on my mind

finding solace in stars over me, the sea…and you

Deep thoughts ran rampant inside my head

as my flight from the sweet oblivion flew back

into the mundane existence of my dull life with him

I kept thinking of our bright stolen moments we

spent together beneath August's phases of a lover's moon

and hating the emptiness I would now face without you near

In the following weeks, we exchanged cards and letters

e-mails from you quickened my pulse, stoked my longing

you sent me a birthday card and a meaningful book

touched, I called you; your sweet voice beckoned me

she’s just a friend I told my wife, no cause for concern

but at night, under our stars, you were all I thought of

Each day without you grew dimmed, sunlight was not mine

nights grew colder still, and a dismal moon shone grey

light 'pon my soul, I waited just to hear your voice saying

to me the sweet things I wanted to hear,

I knew you were a forbidden love~ but the deepest

part of me knew your soul and mind, she didn't know

We conspired; contrived fate converging our paths

in an airport embrace along the Gulf in September

over candlelight we dined, you touched my hand

your sandaled foot brushed my shin and lingered

by starlight, my hand found yours, fingers entwined

I felt no ring on your left hand, mine was in my room

The blue vaults of heaven cast azure skies

you were the romantic so and so ,my dashing

prince, it was my birthday now and you my gift

beneath a September moon in all its splendor

I found myself gravitating towards you, heart caught

in swirling essence my bare fingers tell you, I'm yours

Destiny ordained, we made our way back to the hotel

where we stood in your open door, at the precipice

falling for you, I hesitated just outside your threshold

fully intoxicated by you, time and space blurred

my unclad finger cold, I burned like the sun for you

your starlight eyes, inescapable gravity, drew me in…

into my body heat with each kiss and caress

I held the moment, not wanting this night of passion

to end, yet knowing it must

I blushed with desire to have you completely

feeling in sync with every fiber of your soul

could it be we were meant to share this love divine....

Another great collaboration from you two! I love the title and the epigraph -- event horizon and black hole indeed. Wow!

As a reader, I found myself wondering one thing: do the people feel the oblivion spoken of in the epigraph, or is that a narrator's POV? Either way, while the poem left me wanting to know what comes next (WILL there be a Part Deux???), I think I would've liked a referral back to the epigraph somehow. One or two lines from the narrator/italicized POV, perhaps, or a comment from one or both of the poets. But not too much, and it's just a thought! The unknown of what's next is an essential part of that event horizon and the appeal of the poem!

Thanks for sharing and good job!

Wonderful job. I really liked this and I loved the allusion to a black hole. Captured. Entranced. Consumed.
