Long Distance Relationships

"

The pleasure of being an American is that you can choose to join the military, where you can get paid, get free housing, and pay low cost for necessary life supplies. Under one condition you sell your soul to the United States Military System. Where they can tell you what to wear, where to live, and how to act for the amount of years you sign up for. The hardest part has to be leaving your family and friends, starting a new life with complete strangers.

“I have decided to join the air force” said her soul mate, the person she spent every waking second with. Leaving her here forced to socialize with the rest of the world.

His reason were never convincing to her, he told her school was not for him and he could not continue to work jobs that did not pay him a good salary she did not understand, but nothing he could say to convince her that joining the military was a good idea. But he convinced that this was the right thing for him to do since most of the men in his family followed the same path. Though she did not want him to leave she also did not want to hold him back from what he believed was the best way to live his life. Accepting to continue their relationship no matter how long distant it got. How could anyone think she would simply throw away all the happiness she had with this man because of some distance? Others have done it so why could they not do the same, the love they had for each was just as strong as anyone else’s.

They were romantic people, their relationship was all about food and cuddling but mostly food. Sharing a meal with a lover was beyond magical to her, getting dressed up to impress each other, all the blushing, holding hands, playing footsie, and the pleasure of saying you have been to a place with someone you love; marking your territory. Right before her dates she tried on everything in her closet by the time she was dressed everything in her closet that was nicely ironed and hung was now all over the floor and bed. Looking into the mirror in attempts to figure the perfect way to place my hair so the all of her best features are shining. Finally walking out the door late as usual.

They cuddled on the subways of New York City, the train is filled with the stressed out working class. But they were in heaven in their fancy clothing holding hands madly in love. When they finally having the pleasure of never having to say table for one, they sat across each other hands never letting loose until our food arrives, wiping away dressing from each faces and laughing about life. Nothing could possibly ruin their moment, even if the food was uneatable or the waiter had their presences they saw nothing in the world but each.

But all that was gone, now she was left to eat her meals alone praying that someone would call her or even send a text message to keep her time. At first it was difficult since she could not even speak to him on the phone, but the US postal even service defiantly came in handy. The exchanging of love letters while he was in basic training was like getting a Christmas gift every week or so in the mail. Living off these letters reading them every night like they were prayers you said before bed. Having a full time job defiantly kept her mind off of the situation for a while but it was not enough also her job was not the greatest thing for a person that was planning on doing a whole lot of traveling.

Her job ruined everything. Working over forty hours a week, she was a dedicated employee in hopes that when she requested for time off to go see him and attend his graduation ceremonies they would not have any issues with it. But little did she know was that working at the airport there was no such thing as time off, if you wanted to go away you had to put a request in and if someone of a seniority put in the same request they got over you. That was not the worst part of it all, if the airline saw that it was not a good time for them for you not to be there then your request was automatically denied. Being a fairly new employee did not help her case either. Which caused her to miss both of his ceremonies.

Convinced that he now hated her she did not give up on him. She did anything she possibly could to make their relationship work. At this point she was capable of communicated with him through the phone and they could also video chatted. Thank God for technology, it is said that people these days have trouble communicating with each other because technology has forced us to become anti-social. Technology was her savior, people just do not understand the importance of it thus taking advantage of it and using it for the wrong reasons.

Technology brings people that are on opposite sides of the world together allowing the millions of immigrants to communicate with their loved ones back home. It is the way we share our happiness and grief with the rest of the world. Allows us to hear and read about the latest news about the entire world while it is happening or even after it happens. Without modern technology so many of everyday activities would not be accomplished. Technology is not only a blessing for people in long distance relationships or immigrants it is also a necessity for companies, families, schools, and the government. Almost every single person in the whole world uses technology for so many different reasons. They say that technology has ruined these generations and the future generations but that is only because they have chosen to use it for the wrong reasons.

“I got stationed in California” listening through the phone regretting how much she loved her phone unable to curse it for bringing her the most depressing news she could ever receive.

Dying beyond a million times a day at the thought of her lover moving across the country leaving her in this big city all alone. Who was going to take her on dates, cuddle with her in movies, and show her love the she needed? He came to see her before he left to California even though their days were nothing like they were before he had left but she was just glad he was here and she could once again hold him, smell his hair, and most of all hear him say he loved her while looking into her eyes making her feel like she was heaven. No drug in the whole world could describe the high she got from hearing the words “I love you Sarah” from him. But like any high it was temporary and no drug dealer could resell her that high. His stay was over and it was time for them to say good bye to each other till God knows when. Her high did not last very long after his departure.

A couple of days before he left she was fired from her job because she was calling out to frequently due to illnesses. Her job of course did not believe her excuses but they were the truth she was broken without her other half, but no one could understand that, her eating habits were terrible, she was barely sleeping and New York’s bipolar weather did not help a bit. So she was left with nothing to keep her mind off the distance, school did nothing but remind her of how miserable she was. All she seemed to see were couples walking around hand in hand, kissing, and giggling together it drove her insane. But this was not the worst of her situation, with all the stress Sarah was coming upon it caused an incredible amount of fighting to begin among the two of them. They fought over everything and anything which bought them to the break up stage of a relationship.

“That's not fair of me to do that to you. So I think we should just end this. It’s better that we break.” The most dreadful email anyone in the world would have wanted to receive. She cursed technology once again for bringing more misery to her life. He felt like he was keeping her away from the goals she wanted to accomplish and that he did not fit in her plans. Which was not entirely a lie but she definitely was not ready for him to end the phone calls, craving the little attention she got from she refused to disconnect from him. Making it her mission to get him back. You can only imagine how difficult that was going to be for someone that had no job or parents that were not approving of the relationship to begin with. So technology and her settled their differences in order to work together to get her lover back.

Five months later she had enough money to go see him by that time it was too late. The love he had for her was gone all he was interested was a friendship with her. This time technology was not the evil one to drop the news on her. He told her to her face; no hiding in her room from the rest of the world she just had to take it in. She only had two choices to continue her trip in California with her ex-lover or leave early and embrace the truth alone on her way back to New York City.

Technology is a big part of our lives it breaks and makes so many relationships. Even though it is a great tool many abuse it, so it important to be cautious of the way you use it. Long distances relationships are one of the hardest relationships to have because issue of trust always come between people. Not only do you have to be completely trusting of your partner but you have to have a game plan. Things never go as planned so being understanding of a person’s situation is another thing you must focus on. Many have conquered the long distance relationship but even more have failed.

The reason behind the story:

I wrote this story for many reasons my biggest reason was to show the connection that we have to technology and how much it changes our lives. Other than that I wanted to show that true love is real. I have heard to frequently by the people of my generation that love is not real but they have not allowed themselves to experience it, really enjoy the pleasure of sharing your time with a significant other and not only focusing on sexual parts of it.
