Prologue

A Chapter by Foxembers

Everything was normal. Then, a per usual, the kidnappings started. Not that the kidnappings were a constant occurrence but that, as usual, something happened to interrupt their peace. It never lasted for long. The problem this time is that it wasn't them. They knew this because they preferred to keep it personal--more fun that way, or so they said--kidnapping was something they would never do.

As nice as it was to have a change of pace for once, they could only appreciate it for a little while before the severity of the situation sunk in. this wasn't the usual game anymore. Innocents were involved. One wrong move could end with more serious consequences then they had ever had to deal with before.

Normally, they wouldn't even be involved with a problem like this, but recently the police had found out their identities. Since then they would be called in for the more whimsical cases. They didn't particularly like the arrangement. "Real world" crimes were out of their jurisdiction. They preferred to fight "their own kind", and don't like the responsibility that came with protecting civilians. They didn't have much choice in the matter though. It's not like they could just disobey the government now that they had so much leverage.

Still, this case was an anomaly, even for them. At first glance it had seemed like a normal kidnapping scheme, something the police could take care of on their own. But, something hadn't been right. Despite the police not knowing what it was, they really didn't have many options, except to hand the case over to them. The Kidnapper had made sure of that. Though it's still a mystery as to why he wanted them involved.

In any case, they had the job, whether they wanted it or not, and they were about to be involved in a much larger problem then they had originally thought.

The hallway was meticulous. A starch white under the bright lights lining the walls. Each door held two lights, both implanted with multiple sensors to alert anyone inside of intruders. The slight clicking of her heels rebounded into an almost thunderous echo. All this combined threatened a headache.

Finally she reached the door. E44. Or the "Experiment Death" room as she had heard the rookies whisper. It wasn't a very good nickname, but that did nothing to help her jittery nerves.

Surprisingly--though she should've expected it--the door didn't make a single sound as it softly swung open. Even the handle mechanisms were perfectly silent. She could barely breathe. It was a suffocating silence. Then she saw him, and had the silence not been so heavy she would've sighed with relief. Still, a small wisp of a breath escaped, and he cocked his head, his ear twitching.

He took a second to carefully set down his tools, and looked up.

"Ah, Doctor." Though it broke the quiet, his voice was so silky smooth and warm that it didn't feel >>>>>> "Do you have news?"

"Umm...oh, OH! Yes! In fact, it's better than either of us expected. Most of the subjects were close enough for it to work. And, in our untested group I found and exact, 100% match for the special type you'd wanted."

"What?! 100%? Who is it? I-" Then he paused in his ecstasy. He must've--somehow--sensed her sudden, slight hesitation. "What? What's the problem?"

"Well...yes, you see she's a perfect match b-"

"She? It's a girl?!"

"Y-yes, and...well, she...she's the daughter of..." She cringed, not wanting to say it. Though he hadn't specifically told her so, no one had really, she knew by instinct that it was the worst word you could say in his presence.

Anyone else would've been perfect, easy. But him? No.

"Oh." He sat down heavily. All the earlier joy draining from his beautiful face. A weight seemed to settle in him and he slumped forward, head falling into his hands.

They both stayed there. Seconds ticked by, and she shifted slightly, uncomfortable in the situation.

"Leave. Please leave. I need some time."

"Of course." Relieved, she slipped out quicker then she would've normally. He stayed where he was, slouched over as if in pain.

Without warning, he jerked backwards. His head snapping back and a laugh, starting faint, yet tainted for a voice so wondrous, grew into an uncontrollable cackle. When calm finally crept back into the room he relaxed forwards, as if it had never happened.

"Finally. My revenge can begin. What a hilarious coincidence that his beloved only daughter is exactly the test subject I would need. This will be...fun" A grin stretched across his face, lovely despite its meaning. A final small chuckle slipped through his lips, softly. as he turned back to his work, "Shouldn't keep them waiting too long."
