Best Friends Forever

Best Friends Forever

A Poem by Nana Carmine
"

I was reading a sad story and this came to mind

"

We promised forever

As we laughed together

Splashing playfully in the cool running stream.

But that seems so long ago.

We said nothing could ever

Break us.

We wouldn’t be split by something stupid

Like arguments and such.

We sat together

Dreaming of lives we’d never have

As we looked

Up into the stars.

We ran forever

Until we could run no more

And we collapsed.

Smiling all along.

We promised we’d never

Forget the stupid promises

Meant to be

Broken.

We grew together

But we seemed to grow

Farther and farther

Apart.

Now it seems like we never

Sat under the stars

Hand in hand

As we said best friends forever.

I really like this poem becuase I think many people can relate to it- almost everyone has had a really great friend and sworn that they would always be friends, and then they slowly grew apart. that's one reason why its so good- people can connect to it and understand the feelings you put forth. I liked it, in case you couldn't tell. As usual with your poems, its sad, but the best poems are like that- ones that don't make you feel anything aren't very memorable.

This poem has essence of truth, betrayal and living. The more I read this the more I thought of my own friends that I lost, and where they are now. Its scary they aren't like what they were any more. This poem has truth to everyone that reads it and the connection to the readers is almost face to face. The more I read poems the more I learn and become better and I think I've learned a lot from you about the words and emotions that you place into your poems. It doesn't matter who is listening, you are there to speak these words of great power and influence to those around you.
Great job on this poem.I will remember it always...

I love it..this is so bluntly true for so many people..i like how you made it Relatable to any and everyone that has ever had a best friend in the past..I have lost a lot of really good friends to time..time makes us grow up and new friends become old when we get more new friends..its always hard when you get out of highschool and everyone goes to thier own separate colleges, its hard to keep the same promises that you had before and the same dreams when you are not constantly around that person any longer..i felt this poem with my soul..it made me a lil' sad when i was reading it but i am glad that i did..thanks for posting it..

Boy, is that feeling familiar.. What can I say? Very well written, it captures the intended subject of the works. Nostalgic.. Very good.

Let me tell you something; I, too, once had some best friends and we aren't talking anymore. Most of them, we just drifted apart. Some of them, we just went in different directions. Only two of them were based on the acts of the betrayals. So, there's no such things as best friends, only real friends.

Anyway, this is pretty sad, yet it's true. And the writing is more than just good, it's an important message in some ways, so all is good here...

It's sad. It's very sad. I've seen too many friendships end up like this, including some of my own. Lovely write.

"we promised forever" - what an engaging opening. this had me hooked. sraight away. it's a good poem, but i feel it wavers toward the end, especially with this stanza:

We promised we'd never
Forget the stupid promises
Meant to be
Broken.

it is very reptitive within itself and of images conjured up before - broken. otherwise, a very nostalgic, melancholy throughout, and conveyed well.

I can relate this to a couple of relationships in my life. Good writing.
