Til Death We Do Part

Til Death We Do Part

A Story by Bren

Although Fred had been dead for two years, he still had unfinished business

"

I was lying in the bed thinking about the horrible fight Fred and I had several nights ago when my cell phone rang. I was so caught up in my thoughts that it started me. It was Sonya, my co-worker at the ambulance service. I knew from the urgency in her voice that something was wrong.

"Hey are you at home?" she asked with urgency in her voice.

Looking at the clock on my nightstand I saw it was after ten p.m.

"Yeah, what's up?" I said sitting on the side of my bed.

"I'm on my way to your house. You don't need to be at home alone right now."

I was quiet for a minute. Why was she acting so weird I was thinking.

"Why? What's going on?" I asked curious. About this time there was a knock at the front door. I got of the phone with Sonya to answer the door. I new she would be at my house soon wherever she was.

I opened the front door and my ex was standing there with a blank look on his face in his police uniform. He pushed past me asking questions.

"Where are the kids? He asked as he walked toward my bedroom.

"Kris went to get Tonya from work and Brandy is asleep. What's going on?"

You need to sit down. He was out of breath as he help me by my shoulders and gently pushed me toward my bed. I sat on the side of the bed wondering what was wrong.

"It's bad Bren." Jeffrey said.

"What's bad?" What's going on? Sonya is on her way here and she's acting strange and you are here acting strange to. Is it my kids?

"No the kids are fine. It's Fred. He was just killed in a car accident."

"What do you mean killed in a car accident? Stop playing."

"No serious. I just got the phone call. Someone call the police department trying to locate you. I just happen to be at the front desk and got the call. He has just finished transporting an inmate to the prison and was on his way back to the station when an 18 wheeler was coming hit him in a curve."

I was speechless. This couldn't be true.

Sonya and Mark from the ambulance service appeared at my bedroom door. I never heard them at the from door. Sonya walked over to me and pulled me into her arms. I couldn't move. My heart felt dead and heavy.
