Mason

Masons POV



I left Jesse's house and headed towards mine. My whole house was full of boxes at the moment and my parents were out on a job and wouldn't be back for a while.The talk with Jesse got me thinking about my brother, of course I didn't tell him that I mean who would believe me? Sometimes I don't believe myself. you see my brother was a Protector as am I. He died protecting his Human Angel. If I told Jesse that he would have locked me up and phoned the looney bin. I'm training to take his place apparently my charge is different,they won't be a human Angel or star child. Mine will have the power of precognition or as Humans call It the ability to see the future before it happens. This person is supposed to be the one to end all suffering and somehow I got paired with them ha poor person i cant even look after my goldfish let alone a person.Dodging the boxes in the living room I made my way to the kitchen looking in our fridge the only thing i could find was some orange juice. I sat on the kitchen Island alone with nothing but my thoughts. When I had finished my juice I grabbed my football from the sofa and headed outside. I plugged my headphones into my phone and turned the music up. I noticed that my dad hadn't unloaded the goals yet so I started aiming at a small crack on the wall. Kicking the ball continually as it bounced back and forth, I must have been a it for a while as I noticed my phone had a few bars of battery left and it was fully charged when I came out. I took my headphones out and it starting ringing an unknown number appearing on the screen before i could answer the battery Died. I tried turning it on but it was no use I put it back in my pocket and went back to the ball resuming kicking at the wall. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched but I rubbed if off. I'm probably just being paranoid. After what seemed like a few minutes I could faintly hear someone shouting my name Mason!Mason" I turned towards the gate and saw Jesse running towards me followed by another boy and a girl who seemed to be giving off this weird aura. Jesse stopped at the gate slightly out of breath "Ma....son" he managed to get out between his breaths. I walked towards the gate so I was directly in front of him "Hiya Jesse. Everything okay?" Jesse opened the gate and came in, the other two followed "Mason! You okay? Nothing's happened your fine right" I stared at him he has gone completely mental "shouldn't I be asking you that question after what today is?" Jesse looked around cautiously before grabbing my arm gently "Mason we need to go, I can't explain right now but you need to come with us" I was about to follow him when a rustling came from the bushes behind me. Jesse tensed up and pulled me behind him the other two must have sensed the same thing as the also stood in front of me " Dude it's probably just a cat. Chill out would you" I pushed through them all back to where I was stood before. I bent down and starting calling out "hey kitty, kitty. Tsk tsk" I continued closer to the bushes.

Jesse was about to say something when the bushes rustled again, instead of a cat appearing from them a grotesque creature that looked almost half human half dragon appeared. We heard the gate being opened and man brushed past Jesse and made his way next to the creature . Jesse remained tense behind me, the other boy said a few swear words and the girl started shaking. I turned back towards Jesse who looked just about ready to attack him. The boy and girl were holding him back. I know i should probably act panicked right now but Jesse seemed to know this man without taking my eyes off the creature I spoke to nobody in particular " Im gonna take a guess and say you guys know each other" surprisingly the answer cam from The mystery man "That we do my son" I looked from the creature to man and then towards Jesse who was staring at him "anyone gonna tell me whats up?" No body answered my question "What do you want with him Cygnus?" Jesse shouted at the man I now know as Cygnus "Now, Now Jesse, I'm simply here to welcome him to the neighbourhood and also to hand him his new school timetable" I couldn't take my eyes of the creature, what's a teacher doing with something like that? I knew what this thing was i had seen it in my protectors training it was a Ahemait a creature that followed Ammut in ancient Egyptian times. Ammut being the Eater of Hearts I knew that something was wrong. My father told me that the only way to summon a creature of Ammut is to corrupt a pure soul or be born with a corrupted soul. He walked closer to me and held out a piece of paper. I walked towards him cautiously not making eye contact with Ahemait. I was now directly if front of him I slowly raised my hand to take he paper as soon as my hand made contact with it the mans hand clamped down on my own making it impossible to move it. Jesse and the others were still watching ready to pounce on him. The man looked from my hand to my face and grinned Evilly

without releasing his grip on my hand he spoke "It was nice seeing you again Jesse and I look forward to seeing you at school Mr Buford" I released my hand and he motioned for Ahemait to return back to the bushes Cygnus brushed past Jesse again and with one last knowing look towards me he disappeared.

Although I had a good idea what was going on I turned back to face Jesse "wanna tell what that was about or am I suppose to guess" Jesse looked at the other two "Can we go inside? I will explain there" I looked at the other two who looked just as confused as I do "Uh yeah sure come in. You'll have to excuse the mess we haven't unpacked yet" Jesse simply smiled and they followed me in. I still couldn't comprehend the fact that he had a creature of Ammut with him. I moved some of the boxes off the sofa motioning for them to sit down. "I don't know where to start" Jesse had had his eyes locked on the floor the other two had there eyes glued on Jesse. "How about you start by introducing me to your friends over there" I pointed towards the two on the sofa. Jesse smiled apologetically and stood up "Oh yeah sorry This is Orion" He pointed towards the guy on his right he smiled at me "Orion this is Mason" Orion took my hand "Nice to meet you" Orion had a energy about him that almost seemed familiar he then pointed towards the red headed girl "and this Is Crystal" Crystal also smiled and took my hand "Crystal this is Mason" she let my hand go "Nice to meet you Mason" Crystal had an aura that i recognised. she was a star child I'd know her energy anywhere they both sat back down on the sofa followed by Jesse and then me.

A silence fell over the room and I decided to break it "so do you mind telling me what happened out there? He obviously knew that man but I was hoping he knew something about why that man had Ahemait with him?. Jesse looked at me and Orion spoke up "Yeah I would like to know as well. How did you know Cygnus would be here?" We were all staring at him awaiting his answer "Before I start Mason promise me you won't freak out? And that whatever I say you take in with a open mind" I simply nodded in return if only he knew. Jesse looked at us all before continuing "Kathryn didn't die by accident. She died saving the world" he looked at me making sure I was taking it all in when he noticed I had he continued "That man at your house just now he.. Well he isn't exactly human. He comes from this planet called the dragon nebula. Now that's something I haven't here'd of before again he paused allowing it to register all three of them were on edge expecting me to freak out but when I didn't Orion continued instead "Kathryn and I are something called a Human Angels" that's it! Now I know why his energy was so familiar. I knew exactly where this was going. I also had a hunch how Jesse knew this was going to happen and why I was sensing so many different energy patterns.Jesse realised I had gone quiet "Mason you ok?" I nodded "you don't have to go on. I know what your going to say. I kind of have a secret of my own" It was there time to look confused "Jesse do you remember I told you about my brother?" Jesse nodded "He was a Protector. He died looking after his Human Angel" Jesse looked shocked, Orion had a blank look and Crystal remained quiet. "I am also a Protector. I was sent to the town in order to find my charge. Only my charge isn't a Human angel nor is it a star child. My charge will have the power of Precognition" Jesse still looked shocked but responded "You mean seeing things before they happen? That sort of thing?" I nodded and Jesse's mouth formed an O shape. Crystal who had been quiet this whole time spoke up "Jesse how exactly did you know Cygnus was going to be here? Does it have something to do with what happened on the stairs?" Jesse simply nodded " Im not sure how it happened but it was like a video playing in my mind only I didn't want to be there. I knew something was going to happen and I knew I Had to stop it" Orion nodded as If he just connected the pieces "Jesse is your charge isn't he? The one who can see things before it happens?" I nodded In answer to his question again a silence fell over the room.



Crystal decided to break the silence "so what now? Why do you think Cygnus is back?" Jesse shook his head "I have no idea. But whatever it is it can't be good. One thing I do know Is that he is after Mason for some reason and we can't let him get to him" The Others nodded in agreement.

I needed to ask them about the creature. See how much they know. "Guys? I don't suppose you knowing anything about that creature do you?" The all looked blank and shook their heads no. "One of those creatures killed my brother. They are called Ahemaits " I looked towards them all Jesse and Orion had a blank look but Crystal seemed to understand and continued '"they are followers of Ammut" again they looked blank so she continued "Ammut was an Egyptian goddess that was also known as The Devourer. She was the the the being who waited by the scales in the underworld waiting to consume the hearts of those who did wrong" Jesse visibly paled. I took over from Crystal "The only way to call on a follower of Ammut is to either corrupt a pure soul or to be born with a corrupted soul. And once the Ahemait has been summoned it takes the soul of four people who each have pure hearts in order to banish her once more"

It was silent for a while until Jesse spoke up "ok now I'm defiantly not comfortable with leaving you alone" they all exchanged looks as if working a plan out in their heads until Jesse spoke up "he could come with me... But.. With everything going on with my mum I don't think that's a good idea" Jesse looked at the other two "my mums got the family over" Orion said they then both turned towards Crystal "id love too but my foster family have no idea what's going on" I looked around at them all and without thinking blurted out "Well my parents are at work and won't be back for a couple weeks. Do you guys want to sleep here tonight?" They all looked a each other communicating through their eyes and at exactly the same time they smiled and looked at me "ok that's is extremely weird" they laughed and nodded "We would love to stay thank you". Jesse stood up followed by Crystal, Orion and then me "we will go grab our stuff and be right back. Just be cautious incase he does come back ok?" I nodded as they left the house.

I closed the door to be greeted by more silence. That didn't work the way I thought, I mean finding my charge so soon that was weird enough but to find out his sister was a Human Angel that's even more strange. Usually the ability goes to one sibling not both. I decided to go and clear out the guest bedrooms before they got back. My house was quite big it had 3 main bedrooms and 3 guest bedrooms we are going to use one of those for our Protectors HQ as my dad calls it. I plug my iPod into the speakers and pressed play, turning the volume down so I could hear Jesse knocking on the door. Wake me up by Avicii came on. I started moving the boxes from three of the bedrooms and put them in the forth. As I placed the last box on the floor somebody knocked on the door. I ran to the other room and turned my iPod off, I then sprinted down the steps being carefully of the boxes as I went. I stopped running but instead of stopping I kept skidding and hit the the door with a loud bump "Mason? You ok In there?" Jesse shouted with a hint of worry, Instead of answering I reached up to the handle pulling myself up and opened the door one hand on my forehead "Yeah I'm good, come on in" Jesse walked in with a small bag in hand and his guitar case. Jesse looked at my head "you sure your ok? That looks pretty bad. What happened?" I laughed "Im fine. Apparently the floors don't have much grip" he gave me a confused look "I was running to get the door and carried on sliding" suddenly he started laughing "yeah yeah come on Let's take your stuff to your room" he followed me up the stairs "This one is my room, Jesse you can take the one on the left" he gave me a quick nod and headed inside to unpack.

I went back to my room and noticed a photo of me and my brother. I took it from the box and sat on the only clear space on the bed I trace my fingers along the picture. "Hey bro, I met the person I'm meant to protect today. He seems alright i think we are going to be good friends actually. I wish you were here to guide me though. I don't have a clue what I'm doing" I chuckled. "I miss you ....everyday" suddenly there is knock at the door I carefully put the photo back and opened the door. Jesse stood there with a first aid kit in his hand once he saw my face he started looking worried "hey what's wrong? Are you crying?" My hand Instantly went to my face sure enough I felt tears. I hadn't realised I had been crying. "Im ok, I was just remembering" Jesse gave me a confused look I motioned him to come inside and sit on the bed. I picked up the photo of me and my brother and gave it to him. I then sat next to him "that's my brother. It was taken the week before he was killed" Jesse remained quiet for while "you two looked like you got on really well" I gave a small chuckle "that couldn't be further from the truth. The day before he died I spoke to him on the phone. I was horrible to him. I called him some things. He was so angry. That's the last memory I have of him and i cant help but think its my fault he died, If i hadn't have made him mad he wouldn't have been angry and he would have been more aware of what was going on" I was a sobbing mess at this point. Jesse looked up from the photo and at me. He put the photo down and embraced me into a hug. He didn't say anything he just hugged me. I'm great full he wasn't like the rest. Trying to tell me it wasn't my fault when I know it was. "I know how you feel. It's like that with Kathryn. I'm her big brother it was my duty to protect her, after dad left I promised her I would look after her and I let her get killed. You want to know the worst bit? I saw the whole thing. Cygnus that man had me tied up and watch her die. I will never get that image out my head" It was Jesses turn to cry now so I returned the favour and hugged him back. We both recoiled from the hug and Jesse started opening the first aid kit. He began cleaning the bump on my head in complete silence. Minutes later he had finished an started putting the contents back in the box. "Thanks"I said when he was done. He smiled at me and opened his mouth to say something when another knock sounded "That's probably the others" we quickly wiped any evidence we had been crying and went downstairs. I opened the door and let Orion and Crystal In. I showed them to their rooms Jesse went to help Crystal.



I was about to go and help Orion when there was another knock at the door. I left the guys to unpack and walked to the door careful not to slip this time. I opened the door cautiously to reveal a woman"Hello can I Help you?" She smiled at me "I was just welcoming you to the neighbourhood. My name is Sarah. Sarah Carroll" I took her outstretched hand "I'm Mason Burford" she smiled back at me " I didn't think you would have time to cook so I made you some casserole" I smiled thankfully and took the dish that she had been holding"Thank you It looks lovely" the lady smiled and said goodbye. I closed the door and walked to the kitchen placing the dish on the Island. At that point Jesse, Orion and Crystal came in. Jesse had his guitar slung behind him "who was at the door?" Jesse asked as he and the others sat down. Some neighbour bought some food around "yummy I'm so hungry I could eat a horse" just as Orion Said this his stomach growled so loud I'm surprised the people across the road didn't hear "hold on let me find the plates and you can have some" they all nodded as I went to search through the boxes. The first one I came to had ornaments and tea towels in. The second box had photos in I pulled out the first photo in the box it was of me and my old training buddy Melissa. "Melissa?" A voice came from behind me I turned to the face of Jesse. "Hmmm what did you say?" Jesse took the photo from my hand "How come you have a photo of Melissa?" He continued looking at the photo "she was my old training buddy. How do you know her?" Jesse put the photo down and looked at me "She is Crystals protector and Kathryn's best friend. Small world huh" just as I was about to answer him Crystal came in "what's taking so long. I swear Orion's gonna bite all his nails off in a moment" I tore my gaze away from Jesse and went to the next box "aha here we go" I pulled out enough cutlery and plates for all of us and walked back into the kitchen Jesse put the photo down and followed behind. I dished us each a plate of casserole and sat down " You two settled in okay?" I asked Orion and Crystal They both smiled "yeah we did thanks" I smiled back"so what do you guys wanna do? I was thinking a campfire later in the garden" Crystal looked excited "I love campfires that's sounds lovely" Jesse and Orion nodded in agreement. "Ok Orion, Crystal can you both go and get some blankets from the cupboard upstairs?" They both nodded and headed upstairs. I turned to Jesse "can you go and sort the campfire out? I will pop shop and get some marshmallows" Jesse looked hesitant." What's up?" Jesse looked at me for a while "it's not safe for you at the moment and I think I May have some stuff at mine we can use. It's lucky I live next door. Come on" Jesse walked to the door and I was left standing there. It's almost funny how I'm supposed to be the protector and Jesse seems to be the one protecting me. Its also weird how he knows Melissa. "Mason! You coming?" Jesses voice snapped my out of my thoughts "Urm yeah sorry I'm coming now" I walked towards the door with Jesse.



After Jesse and I had gotten some food from his house we came back and set the campfire up moments later Orion and Crystal appeared with the blankets. The sky was pitch black now and the orange flames lit up each of our faces. Jesse was sat next to me, Orion on his right and Crystal next to him. Jesse had his guitar in his hands and was strumming a familiar tune

Jesse stopped and Crystal continued to sing

Her voice soon stopped being replaced with Orion's

They all stopped singing and looked at me waiting for me to join in. I looked at each of their faces and realised something. Sitting around this campfire I had friends. People who care I know. Have mum and dad but I never see them anymore. They were still looking at me so I began to sing.

They all smiled and began to sing together

I zoned the rest of the song out. This here felt right it felt nice to finally have someplace at I fit in, we had sung a couple songs and were now laying on the blankets looking at the stars just talking and getting to know each other.
