Desert StarsA Poem by Dominik D. RitesI lay down in the dust and open my eyes to read the desert stars.
I walked amongst the dust,
Heaving dangerous gusts, Smelling scents of rust, And feeling a thirsty lust. "Water, water, shelter..." I find the horizon, Trace it with my eyes, Thinking of all of the ways, I could possibly die. "Thirst, hunger, exhaustion, asphyxiation..." I find the sand, Warm yet cooling in the night. I hold out my hand, Like Superman taking flight. "Fly, go, soar, escape..." I find the desert wind, Picking up and tearing at my clothes, My knees too skinned, To walk through this desert that I loathe. "Keep going, live, thrive, be strong..." I find my feet buried in grain, My hand to shield my eyes from the world, And though I am in so much pain, I let my hand uncurl. "Look, see, know, remember..." I find you there, Beyond the storm, Your winding hair, Behind your feminine form. "It's okay. You're okay. Fly away..." I lay down in the dust, And open my eyes to read the desert stars, And let my world adjust, To the things I can only see from afar. "Good night." I see a reservoir.
