DiremptionA Story by DannyDiremption; Maluk Prelude She knew the meaning, as did her husband. The horn that blew for everyone in the village to hear was a warning that enemies were within the Scepter walls. Long and high pitched, the thum would rouse all 80 some villagers from sleep and continue until the raiders were no longer a threat. Barne would always prepare after the first blast. Firstly slipping the worn boiled leather over his head, tying the rusted buckles at either side quick and effortlessly. He had done this many times before. Swapping out simple sandals for steel tipped boots, hide gloves for gauntlets, he pulled a common soldiers belt about his skinny waste. Finally, to fill one of the empty sheeths dangling by his side, Barne crossed the wooded floor to a small cupboard that occupied only one thing. The most important possession he owned. Needless to say it was without value to most. Marelyn always chuckled softly when her husband talked at length of the weapon that had protected their family for the past 18 years. ''And when was the last time you swung that blade, my ancient prince?'' She would mock him. Marelyn watched her husband through milky eyes. He was old. Still strong and capable, but there was a tiredness in him now that screamed louder than any horn could blow. He met her smile with a faint one of his own when he reappeared from the storespace, shuffling into the candlelight with an iron shortsword in his shaking hand. The surface showed it's age, but before she could begin to complain about it's shoddy condition, the brand vanished swiftly into the skabbard at Barne's side. He gave his wife a quick nod before pacing back, across to the window where he would see nothing but darkness as usual. Marelyn sighed and returned to her stitches.Truly, there was nothing but a broken nights rest to fear from the horn. Whether it be bandits, mountain foragers from the north or even a pack of savage wolves, the danger did not matter. An angel would be sent to protect them, as always. She was not sure of their true names, but the common peoples of Thera had titled their protectors the angels Orillius.
