Populus Noctis

Populus Noctis

A Story by FleurElize
"

The start of a witch taking head of her coven. But the catch is her mother doesn't know. takes place in the early 1900's. This scene in based off of the picture.

"
I walk with my head down. Its foggy out and mother says a woman should never walk alone at night. Yet i find myself alone, had it been an hour ago this would not be. I pull my cape further over my head and pick up my pace slightly. why I do this I am unsure. I would be far more intimidating than anything i come across out here. If mother knew where i was going right now she would have my head.

I check over my shoulder to make sure no one is following me then i make a quick turn down a dark ally to reach my destination. I stand before a gray foundation to a seemingly tall building for the time. To the layperson this would appear as so, just a gray brick foundation, but to me its a door. I tap on it four times in a box like motion and as i do i whisper "Aperiant Occultis Mundi".

The foundation begins to crack and open. It opens to a corridor that is dressed in red wall paper with intricate floral designs on it. A black chandelier hangs from the ceiling and black candelabras line the walls. at the end of the corridor is a winding stair case to which i can hear the others already gathered. I pull my cape tighter and hurry down the stairs and around the furthest part of the crowd in hopes of not being seen.

It is highly inadmissible of the future head witch to be late to her own coronation. I should have been here hours ago, but mother insisted on my having tea with her and a potential suitor. Thoughts of tea are repulsing, and make me more nervous walking through the crowd. I hurry into a room off of the gathering space my lady in waiting bows silently in the corner. i acknowledge her and she begins hurrying to help me into my dress.

My corset is extremely tight and i already feel as though i can not breath, but it is time to start. I can still hear the bustling of conversations going on in the gathering room but i must will them to settle and take their places in the chamber. As I ready to will them I begin to shake. I have always been sure of my powers but right now im not sure of anything. My thoughts race but I must contain them. I take a deep breath and then begin.

I silently will them to settle but its not strong enough. If im going to do this i need to make sure my presence in know always. I try speaking it this time to add to the strength.

"Animum Incipiunt Tempus Stature"

This time they hear and file into the chamber in silence. Every witch can speak and understand Latin without being taught. Its one of the many things that comes naturally to our kind. Lilah, my lady in waiting holds the tale of my dress up and i will the door to open. 'Aperta". As i walk into the chamber everyone stands and begins to chant "Forbis Arcerectura Lucem Signa Populas Venit Hora Noctis". As they chant the chamber door shuts and seals itself into a wall, locking us in. The lights being to dim as i make my way down the the pulpit.

When I kneel in front of the elders the chanting stops and the coronation begins. The ceremony goes by fast and with that its my turn to seal myself to the coven. I turn and everyone is staring at me. Its not like i haven't been here before. it was the same way when all of the young witches become sworn. But this time it makes me uneasy. I step into the circle on the floor of the chamber that shows the moon cycle. This is our secret circle. The time we are most powerful is in the presence of a full moon. Which only makes tonight even more important to us.

The coven joins hand around the circle as i step in. Once everyone is again settled i being my chant. First in my head "Seal me to my coven. Brand me with my rank". Then out loud "Obsignandum Gressum Meis Covina". Notam Cum Discesserim". I repeat this over and over until i feel a burning in my hand and I stop. I open my eyes and i see the coven crest starting to form on my hand. The elders press me to continue chanting. So I do, twice more until the crest is complete.

Once the crest became complete the ceremony was over and i became head witch. The light returned to the chamber and the door reopened. After everyone filed out Lilah helped me with my dress and we walk out to join the rest of MY coven. It is customary that the Head witch usually stay but tonight I must leave. We return to the room off the gathering space. I change quickly into my old clothes and escape back out to the street unnoticed.

Lilah and I hurry back down the ally way and back onto the street. When we arrive home I can see mothers light on in her room. Why is she still awake? For a moment I believe she knows that I have left the house. But the light in her room soon goes out. Hurriedly we cross the street and we are in the house. In ill-favor of waking mother again we slip up the service stairs in the house to my room. Tonight I will sleep peacefully. For tomorrow the hard part begins.
