What Is Fair About Warfare?A Poem by Von AlisWe fought, we died, we are the fallen Here we lie; void from the world we lived to create At dawn we stood beside you, the flags waved overhead The sunset brought the stench of blood as the sun died and left nothing but night I watched my comrades fall, did my Savior catch them? Still they lie in the fields, in the mud, drenched in blood, still they lie Far from the families that they loved Across Poseidon’s domain, under the far expanse of Zeus’ skies In those oceans too, soldiers and heroes find their resting place Rest well, my dear friends, the moon’s glow will light your dreams Among the living am I, though I often wish to join you But the world spins on, we fight our pointless wars Out of the darkness a light has yet to come Under the spell we all have fallen The rhythm of war we still dance to After the gunfire has silenced, there will be peace Ready yourself for this day, when peace finds us Far across the seas the cry will sound Arise, my brothers, let your spirits soar, dance among the living Red poppies will blossom over every heart, lest we forget Every day until then we will ask ourselves, what is fair about warfare? ?s are left unanswered © 2011 Von AlisAuthor's Note
