Let The Flags FlyA Poem by Von AlisLet the flags fly Let the colors unfold Hoist the banner high Salute these colors so bold Lift them into the sky above High over the crimson tide Over the forgotten word love Grazing the flames that never subside The corpses curl at their base But still these stained flags fly The armies below keep pace Marching to the beat of their lie Clicked heels and iron crosses Bloodied uniforms and purple hearts Torn families count their losses Between the ranks the bullet darts Red is for blood White is for innocence Blue is for fidelity Red is for blood White is for innocence Black is for death Here we stand drenched in blood There they stand waiting in the hazes We will stain our lives into the mud Trying to escape their dead gazes Flame and metal screams Lead and steel crash This flag, a man’s dying dreams Here the flags and colors clash So let our colors unfurl and let the flag fly Tear down their flag along with its lies Salute our flag and hoist it high Burn their flag until their flame dies But remember those from either side Those who fought to see their flag fly For their country, right or wrong, they died Remember my children or only white crosses will line the sky © 2011 Von AlisAuthor's Note
