Theme for English 131

A Poem by Minyonka
"

A 'write-like' poem written for my Junior Year English class in high school. Meant to be written after Langston Hughes' "Theme for English B". Our instructions were to write about ourselves.

Theme for English 131

The instructor said,
Go home and write
A page tonight
And let that page come out of you"
Then, it will be true.

Write a poem?
It's just not that easy.
And about myself?
The thought makes me queasy.

Confidence or hubris,
How do you choose?
Is it only conceded
When there's nothing to lose?

Well, I don't like to boast,
And I sell myself short.
So can could I write
A page-long report?

I'm not a great poet
Like Langston or Poe.
No Renaissance from me,
Nor stories of woe.

Just scribblings on paper,
A pencil in hand,
And words running wild
Like a breeze in the sand.

Now it is done,
And I'm suddenly struck.
This thing even rhymes!
Now how's that for luck?

Author's Note

Minyonka
It was meant to be funny, especially because I threw it together in about a half-hour. I basically decided to write a poem about how I am NOT a great poet. ;) Please review with your thoughts.
