Chapter 1

The first chapter

Our story begins, not with me, but with a girl.

A girl possessed of a beautiful and dangerous gift.

Her name is Echo.

At least, that's what her real name is.  Earth names are another thing, so confusing and misleading. 

Some of us, however, do not have names. We are meant to serve the ones who do. Not as a servant, but as a helper. We protect the ones with true sight. Those with the power to see us.  We are what they call on earth "guardian angels."

Echo is one of those people. She has the power to see into the shadow realm, and even lands beyond. She is my first task.  I must protect her at all costs.

You see, for the sight it gives, the Gift also gives (or curses, as I prefer is the right term) the Gifted have other talents.  They vary from person to person, from the thoughts, desires, and wishes. 

Echo's gift is healing.

But the catch is, in the words of one of your earth scientists, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Perhaps you have realized, now, what my dilemma is.  Or maybe, perhaps not... your mortal minds are so slow sometimes.  It has been many years since I was a human like yourselves.  But, you see, Echo was dying, and there was nothing, on earth or in the Shadow Realm, that could stop it.

That is what makes my job even worse, you see.  I cannot save her.  All I can do is protect her. 

And as you will soon find out, those are very, very different things.

Interesting. I like the problem you portray, but, if I were to give advice (not saying to change your story, just an idea for later on) what if, when she heals somebody, she hurts herself, and she takes forever to heal, which is HOW she's dying. Otherwise, not bad. :)
