The World On Her Shoulders

The World On Her Shoulders

A Poem by Jessica

She sits in her closet
Legs pulled to her chest
Stone cold
Fear
Rises in her mind
As she hears the commotion
In the next room
The yelling and screaming and crying
Of a paren'ts fight
And she knows what she'll get
If she comes out.
Not a beating
But an earful
Of things she grows
Tired of
Hearing
Over and over again
She's just a girl.
14 going on 15.
And yet the world
Is upon her
Shoulders
Weighing her down
Making her drown
In tears and regret
Asking "Why me?
I'm only fourteen."
Why doesn't she
Have anywhere to go?
Why isn't she
Accepted
As a daughter
A cousin
A neice
A grandaughter
An alli
Istead of being shunned
Into her small closet escape
Into sitting with her knees
Under her chin
Screaming for support and love
Screaming for it to stop
Screaming for a release
Screaming "Why me? Why me?
I'm just a girl
With the world upon her
Shoulders."
