Life lesson

A Story by Filipe Magalhães

A heartbreaking experience taught me lessons that modified and improved my life. In despite of all grieving, it made me ready for adulthood.
In 2010, I met a 17 years old teenager on the internet. We typed a lot for months. We talked about a lot of things: art, religion, games, etc. Even by internet, we got along well. So, one day I had guts to ask her to be my girlfriend. Since this I became inspired to write romantic letters and poems, and she complimented me for them. Until that time, I only worked as a technician draftsman. I did not graduate, and postponed the English course. She advised me to keep studying due to my potential. Unfortunately, she did not behave kindly as usual when we met in real life. She seemed cold, distant and very concerned with something. After, the young woman explained the reason: She loved another guy in her school, and tried to forget him through our false relationship.  She broke up with me, and accepted me only as a friend. Thus, I groveled for weeks, begging her to become my girlfriend again, but she turned me down.
So, I deleted all of my social accounts (Facebook, Orkut, etc), I wanted to get over this as a man she would praise: worthy, intelligent and educated. Since this, I achieved a lot: I was accepted as a Civil Engineer student in three universities (UERJ, Uff and UFRJ; I attended UERJ as it is nearer of my work); finished the English course; I lost 15 kg and got in shape.
I suffered a lot during this time, but I became a better human being. I learned that a man who does not love himself is not able to love a woman in the right manner. Time has drawn out the passion, grievances and all covetous feelings, though that life lessons and the ever-loving affection is carved in my heart.

I am an older person who has met many young people online, both here & on Facebook. These young people often share such stories with me in texting friendships we share together. I just have to say, this happens ALL THE TIME!!! Young men become infatuated with young women online & the young lady does not want to hurt him, so she doesn't let him know that she doesn't share his same strong feelings. The thing that stands out to me about your story is that you quit all your social media becuz of this happening to you. I feel bad that you didn't feel that your other friends were important enuf to stay connected, even tho this one young lady didn't return the same feelings of love in your direction. Many times a young person will only think of this one love object, but forget about all their other friends, who would be standing by, if only you could reach out to them. Anyhow, I'm glad you turned your heartbreak into a success for your life. Many times, we need to be kicked in the butt to get us going in a direction that we needed to be going in. Congrats on your successes & hopefully your love life is or will be fruitful soon! Thanks for sharing so openly & honestly. I believe your story can help many young people who also find themselves in a similar situation.
