Behind Brave SmilesA Poem by Rosalina PaukA poem about how easy it is to put up walls, and how easy it is to never see what lurks behind them. Trigger warning: suicide is mentioned. He was a sad, scared little boy. He hid behind the walls he built, Never letting anyone in, Afraid of being only an outcast, And nothing more. He felt heavy from bearing The weight of no purpose, The weight of no worth. He tried to help others But he felt like he was only pretending, Pretending to matter. He struggled often every morning On his way to school, to work. It would be so easy to jump, To jump into the path of an oncoming train. The weight of his life would be gone. No longer would he be a burden. But his selfishness kept him alive. He was a sad, scared young man. No one noticed his walls For they so cleverly hid his sorrow As he attempted to lift the spirits of others. No one knew the temptation he faced, To let himself fall into death's hands. Because through it all, He wore a brave, selfish smile.© 2015 Rosalina PaukAuthor's Note
