In Error.

I catch somehow
the view
of inside tears in eyes
that peer
sadly
from furrowed brow.

Behind that half-smile
bravely
shown for camera
lens,
the pretence ends
as
all the while
endless
dry red dust
surrounds the sound
of home
falling,
wall by broken wall,
but
smile she must.

Homeless now,
with age-old grit
she stands,
aware
her world has stopped.

Your writing precedes the Aug 5th Beirut explosion, but just this morning I was reading about how this devastation seems to be the result of a huge gov't clusterfuck, so a scene like this can be a bombing or any number of everyday possibilities beyond battle. I was trying to imagine people living in a huge modern-day city & never imagining there's a stockpile of badly-stored explosive materials in the midst of their everyday existences that could wipe out the entire city. Your poem is so timely for me, since I was just trying to put myself into the shoes of these people & here you've gone & done that so well with realism & tenderness (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

The pathos of such homelessness is appalling and we cannot imagine what goes through the minds of those bombed out of walls which housed their whole possessions......... the raw facts need to be written on hearts and minds and many thanks Margie for this informed review of things in Beirut now the dust has just settled. this took me back to Beirut when I last drove through.. I think it was in 2005 I shall have to check.. they had been re-building the city but had left an area as some kind of testimony to mans destructiveness... and of course lives lost... both the Lebanon and Syria are incredibly beautiful countries, when left to be..

Yes Beirut must have been proud of its beautiful countryside and now must to devastated yet again as per news.......... I felt I had to draw poetic attention to the recent situation and thanks Nev for sharing your memories of actually being there and witnessing man's ability to destroy lasting peace.
