Killer Smile

Killer Smile

A Poem by E.J.Byrnes
"

A man questions a strange little girl about her name.

"

Oh little one with Scarlet Dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Violet tears,

the pain, it overflows..

Sapphire pools of rippling hate

Brown curly locks of dread

Dark skin to match your tainted soul,

Whose innocence has fled..

"Your name." I ask "Is all I want."

"One answer will suffice."

Instead you give a wicked smile,

One coated thick with ice.

Oh little one with Scarlet Dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Pastel tears,

the pain, you'd ne'er show..

Those eyes, once filled with joy and life

Hold no remorse or love

a hellish void now rests in place,

a Crimson past of blood.

"If I oblige, and so I shall

What then will you persist?

a troubled past, a shackled mind

All shrouded in the mists?"

Oh little one with Scarlet dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Crimson tears,

No one will ever know.

"Your name," I say. "Again I ask

Is all that I pursue.

No trickery or foul deeds here"

At least give me a clue?"

She smiled that look of wretched mock

But then with a small voice

She raised her head in soft reply,

and said "It's your own choice."

"What a strange, peculiar girl." I said

"To speak such horrid thoughts..

What harm could come from knowing a name

What madness has it wrought?"

At last between two lips of red

A single word took form

It broke my heart into pieces and shards

And left me feeling forlorn.

Your rhythm and rhyme is impeccable...such a poem of mystery and intrigue you have penned...it's not often I have pleasure to read such poetry and I'm so glad I stumbled onto this one of yours!

Oh very creepy. And very stalker-ish as well. What little girl would want a creepy, older man to know her name? The fact that he keeps persisting on getting her name makes it all that more interesting. I do think that in some places the rhyming pattern is off, but the quality of the poem shines through those mistakes. Really, I admire this. You have such talent! Excellent piece.

Your work is inspiring. In my humble opinion, this is your most amazing creation and I only pray you would write more and more.

I like it. Makes me wonder why the name is so elusively secret. Nice scheme and meter as well. Didn't read sing songy at all. Nice work!

I love the use of consonance in lines
"Instead you give a wicked smile,
One coated thick with ice"
"She smiled that look of wretched mock
But then with a small voice"

You string the words together so beautifully and naturally.
