Killer Smile

Killer Smile

A Poem by E.J.Byrnes
"

A man questions a strange little girl about her name.

"

Oh little one with Scarlet Dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Violet tears,

the pain, it overflows..

Sapphire pools of rippling hate

Brown curly locks of dread

Dark skin to match your tainted soul,

Whose innocence has fled..

"Your name." I ask "Is all I want."

"One answer will suffice."

Instead you give a wicked smile,

One coated thick with ice.

Oh little one with Scarlet Dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Pastel tears,

the pain, you'd ne'er show..

Those eyes, once filled with joy and life

Hold no remorse or love

a hellish void now rests in place,

a Crimson past of blood.

"If I oblige, and so I shall

What then will you persist?

a troubled past, a shackled mind

All shrouded in the mists?"

Oh little one with Scarlet dreams

Whose mind is clouded so

Your apron stained with Crimson tears,

No one will ever know.

"Your name," I say. "Again I ask

Is all that I pursue.

No trickery or foul deeds here"

At least give me a clue?"

She smiled that look of wretched mock

But then with a small voice

She raised her head in soft reply,

and said "It's your own choice."

"What a strange, peculiar girl." I said

"To speak such horrid thoughts..

What harm could come from knowing a name

What madness has it wrought?"

At last between two lips of red

A single word took form

It broke my heart into pieces and shards

And left me feeling forlorn.

This is insane I know, but one of the first things that came to mind is a guy trying to pick up some girl in a bar, put in poetic form. I appologize for that for I know this is much deeper than that. Some things are best left unknown. Bar tender bring me another round. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I did love it though. It's a beautiful piece of artwork.

I love this piece! The color imagery makes it quite colorful and vivid. The story in the poem is alluring and intoxicating, until the very end, and then it has a bit of shock to it. :)
Thanks for sharing your amazing writing with me. I look forward to reading more!

solid rhyme and meter gives this an edge along with a seductive undertone...maybe some names shouldn't be known..

This reminds me of someone I (don't) know. What is in a name, indeed. The 9th stanza says it all, "it's your own choice". It speaks to the overwhelming number of the abused and neglected children of our world that one may feel like just another number and want to keep identity anonymous. I like the format and the imagery is great.

Bittersweet imagery, what images dance upon the words and stanzas you write forth, and from your fingertips there bloomed a beautiful stain of entwining elegant gems. Your words hold within them a powerful graceful weight and curiosity blends in with the mixture of melodies as a harmony to the emotions your story carries beneath the rhythm of honeyed flow. Stunning, and intriguing such an individual idea sprouts.

This was excellent. I loved the rhythm. It painted quite a picture, and kept me wanting to read it over and over with it's flow. It took a bit to understand quite why she wouldn't say her name, but I enjoyed it. It gave a little mystery, and it was fun in the end. It only made me look forward to more of your writing. Nice job.
