Ketsurui- Prologue

Ketsurui- Prologue

A Story by Farblade
"

A research specimen, examined.

"
"Is it done, Takashi?"

The air around the two hummed with a vibrancy that mocked that of a tuning fork. Brilliant green light bathed the room in a neon haze, leaving little visibility for color.

A lone figure stared into a glass tank- a large, cylindrical vial filled with a thick, aqueous solution. Despite the lime glow, one could differentiate the oceanic blue tint to the liquid and the color of what floated inside that fluid: a peach skin tone of a human body.

"No. It’s not complete. Data readouts show the specimen still lacks the psychosis to break free from the meditative trance he was put in.”

A soft sigh was audible, and the figure shook his head in disappointment. “Such progress we’ve made, only to be stopped by this,” and two fists slammed upon a pane of metal in frustration, to be followed by the pointing of a thin, gangly finger at the tank- “a blasted vegetable! Two weeks of precious research, five thousand dollars in genetic chemicals, and hours upon hours of my life, lost!”

The assistant turned, facing the angry scientist; there a grim expression was painted upon his face, along with a tinge of distress in his eyes. “What is your next plan of action for the project, Professor?”

There was a brief pause, and soon the professor spoke. “Terminate the specimen.” He paused yet again, bringing his aged fingers to his chin. It could easily be seen that his expression had changed. “Actually, cancel the termination. I have better plans for this meatsack.”

Curiosity crossed the assistant’s face. “And what do you propose, Professor? That we continue our studies?”

The professor smiled, revealing the wicked sawtooth grin his lips concealed. “You could say that, Takashi.” His eyes turned to the tubes lining the walls, filled with various opaque liquids and covered in various numbers and letters. “Induce Sample DX-755R into the subject’s bloodstream.”

“Sir?” Takashi’s voice tinged with a pang of shock. “That substance has been untested in human subjects, and you know what’s happened to all live experiments that have been exposed to it, correct?”

The professor chuckled. “Indeed yes- mass paranoia which was followed by bestial protrusions from the skin.” His wheeled chair slid backward as the professor stood up and approached the tank, still grinning devilishly. “He’s a dead experiment in my eyes. It’ll at least cheer me up to watch his eyes implode, don’t you agree?”

“As you so believe, Professor.” Takashi carefully keyed in the information for the injection, deeply staring into the liquid crystal display which was the monitor. There was a dead silence in the air, for not even their breath could be heard.

Hydraulics broke the stillness of sound, their mechanical whirring and turning sounding in a compliance instructed by their processor’s dictation. Motors and pumps soon activated, sluicing the opaque fluids into pumps that awaited command.

Eyes glared viscously into the glass vessel, an eager and twisted mind awaiting action to occur. From the top of the container, hoses slowly pumped a thick, crimson fluid into the patient’s feeding tube and IV injections. The motors had finally cut themselves off, bringing back the silence the room once contained.

Those piercing eyes stared deeper into the tank, waiting patiently for a response from their specimen. Seconds upon seconds passed, the professor wringing his hands in anticipation.
Yet another sound was heard- the sloshing of the gel inside the containment vessel. The experiment had burst into a fit of spasms, mocking the reactions of a common seizure. As time increased, the spasms increased in violent movement, the professor smiling with delight and brimming with excitement.

“Yes, this has been the most activity our test has shown in days! Now, to watch on and see if it’ll react like the previous experiments had…”

Almost instantaneously, the spasms ceased, and the clear containment fluid turned a pale pink. Blood oozed out the patient’s skin, pigmenting the already-pink liquid in a red tint.

I like this piece of work here. I'm a big fan of science fiction, and this sort of storyline really does it for me. I like the way that this story gives an example of how science can be when ethics and legal limitations are removed. The specimem itself could have benefited from some more detail so that I could know better what they experimented on, but the picture i got in my head was they they were experimenting on a very tiny human. Which is a very good idea, i would have liked to read more about it, so if there are more to this series in the future, I would like to read it.
