Chapter One: The NoteA Chapter by SkylarThe Enemy of My Enemy Chapter One: The Note I opened up my house door. It was the first time I had ever done this. I breathed in the new house aroma, starting my new life into isolation! Oh what a wonder it must be to be live alone, away from the troubles of my home. It seemed like no one was home anywhere on my street. Of course! They all had work and school. I laughed at my silliness and walked into the house. Most of my furniture had already been moved in and all I had to do was arrange it. The movers were coming in today to help me unload some things here and there. I don’t know when exactly. It was about twelve o’clock noon here in the town of Rausoh. Rausoh was about 100 or more from Bangkok, but it was a coastal town. I couldn’t very well see the coast from my house, I checked as soon as I put my things down. I would have to travel a distance to get there. I could easily smell the saltwater, even through my house. I must remember to get some candles or something to put away that smell. The house was a bit odd to my foreign tastes. I was originally from California, but then I decided to go to college in Japan. I traveled around the eastern Asian countries and found Thailand. I fell in love with the place and had to settle down there once I immediately tried to find an open house somewhere off of the main Urban setting of Thailand and found this place. I never actually came here. I just saw pictures. It was a bit of a bad decision, but here I am today! I decided that I might as well start putting the little things I had into the places I wanted. I pulled out all of the bathroom things, the kitchen appliances, and then I saw something odd. A letter addressed to me from my parents. They must have put it in there when they were helping me pack! I opened up the letter and read it. Dear Ariel, We hope the best for you in Thailand! I hope you have been working on your Thai. Make sure to call us every night and tell us how things are going. We gave something special to the movers to give to you. Hope you like it! Mom and Dad Something special? I wonder what that could be! I already knew to call them and all, but what could it be? I was thinking of anything that I didn’t already have. I tried to look at everything and see what I didn’t have. The list was full of many different things! I looked at the clock after searching, 3:24. It seems like the time here has gone by really fast. I could also hear someone pulling into my driveway. It must be the movers! I went out to greet them. There were only five of them, all fitting into one car. They all got out and the one that was driving came to me and introduced himself. His name was Michael, what an odd name for a Thai person I thought, but then I realized he must have been part English by the way that he looked. “My name is Ariel.” I told him. He also introduced Supao, Zeratsu, Kortesu, and Pau Ming. “Where do we start?” he asked, using his fluent Thai that I almost got lost in. “Well, I think we should start in the living room.” I replied back. My Thai was a bit rusty since I haven’t used it in a while. We worked for about three hours. All the work wasn’t hard for the five men; they picked up and carried until I told them to stop. I was still waiting for that special gift my parents had gotten for me, but it didn’t seem that they had it. It wasn’t until they were about to leave that they gave it to me. “Your parents gave this to us to give to you.” Michael told me, “We hope you put it to good use.” I held out my hands to receive the gift. It was a golden whistle. I immediately recognized it as the whistle my grandfather used when he was in the army. He had fallen down unable to get up due to a broken leg and massive bleeding, and then he blew his whistle. Someone heard him and came to his rescue. If it hadn’t had been for that whistle, then I probably wouldn’t have existed! “Your parents told us to tell you that whenever you are in trouble, no matter how great, blow that whistle and someone will help.” Michael said. I nodded my head in agreement as the group headed to their car to pack up. I was admiring the whistle when I noticed the one named Pau Ming came up to me and gave me a note. He walked away after that and into the car. I opened it up when they left and written in Thai was this: Meet on the Pier at nine o’clock tonight, or some “happenings” will occur. I thought to myself for a little bit. Happenings? What kind of things would occur if I did not attend? I folded the note and shoved it in my pocket. I didn’t have anything to do tonight anyway, so I might as well go. As I was walking inside, a car pulled into one of the neighbor’s houses and out came a person. “Hello!” he shouted. I shouted back and then he shouted, “Why don’t you come over here so I can meet you?” I thought why not, and went over.
