red-letter day

red-letter day

A Poem by Ben Walton

it's a red-letter day with your
nimble fingers and convex hips.
the telephone lines keep us connected
for the ten seconds you can't help but chuckle about,
and the columns on the house i grew up in
crumble when i ask you to stay the night.
but when the sun finally rises
and day agrees to break,
i find myself in my old room,
in my old clothes,
holding the world in my arms.
