Stairs

Stairs

A Poem by Ben Walton
"

"No bad dream f****r's gonna boss me around."

I close my eyes and swallow.
I feel the cold drink flow into my mouth, cold and refreshing, and expand
into razors in my throat as I have trouble keeping it

My fingers tremble as I swallow once more.
The initial firey sensation is gone and has receded to a
warm feeling in my head, kind of like it's a brilliant spring day
and you're going to be flying any moment
but you haven't taken off yet.
Fifteen minutes later I don't have the sense to put the cap back on
when I throw the bottle across the room
but I have the sense to think of you as I
taste fire once more.
I never dreamed I'd have to choose
but that's what it's come down to,
right?
Left?
We can't forget the lyrics from the songs we got over ourselves with.
We can't fight the clever words we swore to god we lived.
But it isn't very hard to forget a promise
because now that I'm flying, I could never make it up or down the

nevermind remember what I told you months ago.
I never intended to hurt you
I just wanted to have fun
because this is what it means to grow up.
