Oh God, Oh God

Oh God, Oh God

A Poem by Havefangswilltravel

I don’t want to be left behind
All these smiles are beginning to drift beyond my reach
Oh God, don’t let me fade into distance
Don’t confine me to the background of a photograph

Happiness is a fleeting thought
But it helps us fall away, only to come back
When the time is right, in fullness and splendor
But, as tuxedos and gowns pose for the pictures
It may draw us to the child in the background, chasing butterflies
Snapshots are permanent, we are unconcerned with our present state

Wishing for nothing at all, but underneath we boil
That damn happiness is leading us back to our own vomit
The same game of cat and mouse,
From a child chasing the vibrance of beauty
To the hardened hunter, tracking the fabled minotaur
But, it’s only when we drive the spear in, do we realize
The beast was ourselves all along

Oh God, Oh God, the shame
The beauty in question has done nothing more
Than wilt before my eyes
When did this axe come to be in my hands?
