Child's Decision

Child's Decision

A Poem by Ian Lundin
"

A comparison of lost Loves... Dated: 09-11-02

"

One had a voice like candy
The other, a voice of silk
Yet I, With childish eyes
Reached for the candy

And my hand as that
Of a child who's eaten no supper
Was slapped away
And the silk handed to me
But children are stubborn and blind

I took the silk with the greed of innocence
But still I wanted the candy
Eventually
I had the candy
But I set down the silk to feast
And it blew away in the wind

Now the taste has long since passed
And the silk is hundreds of miles away
And now
The child grows
Into a man forever longing
The beautiful silk he once possessed

But it is forever out of reach
Likely respected by someone new
In a way
That one child
Could not, until he grew
Now he's lost his smile

Now he tastes the bittersweet
The taste of his self defeat
And the voice of a misguided choice
Speaks the words that this man hates
It's too late.

This is such an original piece! Great use of symbolism to capture the regret that we feel for not taking advantage of opportunities due to our own greed or ignorance, particularly as children. Very interesting & well written!

To late for that one but not the next in the end could lead to a better fate.
