Mia's Harvest- Part OneA Chapter by Ash Addison“There is a legend that surrounds the scarecrow standing in the priest's cornfield and I wanna find out if it's true,” Amy smirked as we all walked towards the cornfield. I rolled my eyes. I wasn't the only one. Pete sniggered like it was the funniest thing he had ever heard and Michael just yawned, clearly bored with the idea. Everyone knew that the priest had put up the scarecrow in the cornfield to scare the crows, even if he denied it. Clearly it didn't work but with it been Harvest Festival and a suppose full moon, we decided to come here and see if we could summon the scarecrow. Well Amy did. I only agreed to come along because my boyfriend, Luke, wanted to go. He loved all his creepy stories and stuff so for him to miss out on this was unfair. Also, it was either this or taking my little sister to trick or treating. Jessica tutted and looked at me, grinning slightly. I knew what she was thinking. She wanted to play a prank on Amy. I shook my head discreetly and she pouted. Amy frowned when she saw no one but Luke was interested. “Oh come you guys, scarecrows are creepy as hell,”
“Yeah they are but that's all.. everyone knows they're fake,” Michael replied, stretching slightly. “If we gonna do this stupid idea, then hurry up... I'm missing out on candy,”
Everyone nodded in agreement. Amy sighed then headed into the cornfield. We all followed. Walking through corn was a lot harder then I realized. The corn itself was tall, almost as tall as me but it didn't take us too long to come to the scarecrow. I dumped my bag onto the floor before looking up at him. It was certainly a sight. He hung from his cross like any normal scarecrow would but his head was tilted down. He didn't really look that scary now that I was actually looking at him. He looked sad and alone. I guess he would be alone if he was real since no one ever really came here and his job was to scare away all the crows. I turned and faced away from him as Amy cleared her throat.
“The legend goes that a few centuries ago, that this land was owned by a creepy farmer and his son and that the son was in love with a local girl from the village but so was the mayor's son. Anyway, the farmer's son tried to woo the girl but when the mayor's son found out, he gathered a gang of his friends and went to the farmer's house. The farmer refused to give up his son and was killed for it so the boy ran out into the fields and the gang followed. They caught up to him and beat him to a pulp before dressing him up as a scarecrow and hanging him on the scarecrow's cross. The farmer's body was found a few days later and the sheriff searched for his son. It was only when he saw blood dripping from the scarecrow that he realized the boy was it. The sheriff called for help but the boy was already dead,” Amy took out her water bottle and took a drink from it as I looked back at the scarecrow, slightly creeped out. “Oh, that isn't his body, Mia. He was cut down and buried in the cemetery but the legend continues,”
“It does?” Jessica asked, though she didn't looked like she cared at all. She looked very bored so did Pete and Michael but Luke looked like he wanted to hear more. That didn't surprise me though. I grabbed the water bottle and took a swing. Of course, it wasn't water in there. It was vodka and coke. I took another swing before handing it back.
“Continue?” Luke asked, smiling. Amy nodded.
“Like I said, he was buried in the cemetery but his killers were never brought to justice. The Sheriff couldn't prove it was the mayor's son because the mayor had the evidence destroyed. Anyway a few decades later, a couple brought the farmer, unaware of what had happened and they set up a nice little cornfield and build their own scarecrow then one Halloween Night, the gang, now grown men, were hunted down and killed in a similar way to how the farmer's son was killed,”
“Which was?” Michael asked.
“Beaten to Death then strung up.. god didn't you listen?” Amy glared before clearing her throat again. “Each one was found in their house tied to some sort of post like a scarecrow. The Sheriff thought it was that someone had found out and took justice into their own hands or that his father wasn't really dead but when the girl the farmer's son was loved with, now married to the mayor's son, ran out of her house, screaming that the couple's scarecrow had killed her husband, the Sheriff knew that the farmer's son got his revenge. The girl was locked in a mental asylum, the men's death were put as accidents and when the scarecrow was back in it's place by morning but it said that if a scarecrow is up in the Farmer's Cornfield on Halloween Night, that the Farmer's son's ghost will haunt it and if anyone dares to disturb him, he will kill them in the way he was killed!” Amy laughed as she finished. All of us just stared at her.
“That's it?” Luke asked, not impressed before walking away with the others. I shook my head and turned to move away but I frowned as I looked at the scarecrow. His head was now looking straight away.
“Um guys.. did you move his head?” I asked, looking behind me but they were already half away across the field. I sighed and turned back but he was looking back down now. Maybe it was just my imagination. I sighed and looked back at the others before feeling a slight breeze. I shivered and turned back round before letting out a gasp and backing off. The scarecrow was now looking right at me and it's arm was out stretched. It was complete still but there was no way anyone could have done that quickly. I backed off as I stared and I swear it stared back at me. I could actually see eyes. Bright blue eyes inside it's eyes sockets. I gasped as they moved and backed off even more, tripping over something in the process before landing on my butt and hearing Amy and that laughing. I looked at what I tripped over and mentally swore. A pumpkin. I quickly got back up and looked at the scarecrow again. He was back in his normal position with no eyes in his mask. Just a normal scarecrow. I blinked and rubbed my eyes but he remained the same. Had I just imagined that? I rubbed my eyes again, just to make sure but it definitely stayed the same. I sighed and turned back round before quickly turning round again. It was still the way it was a moment ago. I shook my head and wrote it off as my imagination playing tricks on me before running off to catch up with my friends. “Hey guys!! Wait up!!”
“Oh hurry up, Mia!!” Jessica shouted as I ran over before linking arms with me and grinning. “You don't want the scarecrow to get ya!”
I shuddered slightly before looking back and frowning. The scarecrow itself was still but the corn round it moved with an invisible wind that seemed to moan. I shivered and continued to walk with Jessica as the others chatted about how much of a failure our little trip had been. I also continued to look back at the scarecrow, wondering if it would move again but it didn't. Jessica stopped, making me jump. She turned to me once everyone else was out of ear shot.
“Ok you've been looking back at that scarecrow six times now,” She stated with her hands on her hips. “Explain,”
“It's nothing,” I mumbled, looking back at it but she tutted.
“Mia, you're freaking me out,”
“Look it's nothing.. I just thought I saw it move and I figured it was one of you guys,” I replied, crossing my arms and looking away.
“Saw it move? You actually saw it move?” She gasped, surprised.
“Well.. yes and no.. I didn't actually see it move.. I looked away and when I looked back, it was looking up then I looked away again and again when I looked back, it was looking right at me and its hand was reaching out, like it was trying to grab me and I swear I saw two blue eyes looking at me,” I mumbled, playing with my hands.
“So you didn't actually see it move?”
“Well no... but it was reaching for me,”
“But it didn't move,”
“Well it must of done,”
“It was probably blown by the wind,” Jessica replied. “Let's catch up with the others,”
“It wasn't the wind,” I mumbled, as she walked off. I started to follow her but the hairs on the back of my neck stood up and a cold shiver ran through my body. I rubbed my arms before taking a glance at the scarecrow and once again, it was looking up. I gulped as a gust of wind blow past me then the scarecrow's head turned and it looked right at me before slowing moving, like it was trying to get down. And that's when I decided to run because I'm pretty sure that wasn't the wind or my imagination playing tricks on me. © 2014 Ash Addison |
