July 4

July 4

A Poem by D Alan Johnstone
"

A song for my kids

"

The 4th of July,

my back to the sky.

Flowers of fire reflect

in the glass of their eyes.

As they glance upward

with smiles and shudders,

percussion quakes

and the earth stutters under foot.

Imagined fissures take them

and swallow them whole.

In glorious flashes of color and light,

their eyes glow.

They are happy,

and I am happy to know them

...to watch the reflection

in the glass of their eyes.

To watch them grow,

and to call them my own.

Aw, this is so tender and sweet and sentimental. I like how it's like a snapshot of a moment suspended in time. To capture the wonder, awe and innocence in our children's eyes, unencumbered by the prodigious heaps of pain and heartbreak in this world... In this moment, they are happy and you are likewise happy to know them. Beautiful! I would definitely want to sing this to my girls!
