A Fool's Gold

A Fool's Gold

A Poem by Faeralyn
"

My take on the classic tale..

"

By way of ship, this bonny lad

shall drink his life dry

though at sea.

His copper eyes glistening,

with drunken desires;

Perchance ‘tis the tempt

of sailors’ wives:

their longing ache,

masked beneath their robes.

“Ah, to be coveted,

by maidens who never wear,”

Tossed his merry minstrel’s lyre

did he.

Set off to sea

to claim his gold.

But what a fool was he,

for knew he not

a brigand ’s skill.

At a merchant’s daughter, did he steal

a stealthy swipe

…or so he thought?

Swish, swish!

Off came his hand!

A hand so young,

unknowing of skill.

So flew the hand,

those copper eyes aflame.

And thus is the tale,

of the dawn of Hook.

For ah, who knew?

That he, too, began a fool.

Hi Faeralyn,
This is very, very cool, and so interesting is your take on the old story. Captain Hook was surely a little naive at the beginning. Yes, I imagine he was. So bright is your eye for the romantic too. There is more to the story than this. What an imagination you have! I like the drunken desires the best.

I really like the way you wrote this "classic" so to speak. It has really flow and rhyme and you can just picture this young boy/lad sailing off and with time turning into a pirate. I laughed when I got to the last four lines, it was a perfect ending. Well done. (and thanks for the laugh, I needed it) ;)

Wonderful olde world temperament to this piece! This transforms the reader through time.

I love Shakespeare and the way this poem feels reminds a lot of him...
The vintage wordplay is simply beautiful I look forward to reading more!
