Should Have Been there

Should Have Been there

A Poem by Candice Grierson
"

ode to a friend

"

I Should Have Been There
I should have been there, on that dreadful day,
The day that b*****d took your innocence away.
I should have been there; there would have been hell to pay!
I should have been there, and you tightly held,
To kiss you and your fears and pain gently dispelled.
In my retarded mind I cannot comprehend how someone could try and hurt your soul.
What were you nine maybe ten years old? I could someone’s heart really be so cold? I cannot imagine the thought of you crying, my strong friend. Yet you have been through so much. The tears will not flow because of my anger, though they burn the back of my eyes. How could someone look into those eyes, oh those eyes... and not think of only protecting you? How dare he have laid a hand on you! How dare he have thought he could possibly deserve to? You my quiet love.
I wish I had been there, I wish I could say more,
But on that blasted day,
I was only four.
But I know I would have fought,
And to you justice brought,
You my quiet love,
I just wish I could hug you for eternity, so it would float away. And you would never think about it not one other day. I wish I could find the right words to say, but most of all I wish I had been there that awful day. I WILL PROTECT YOU NOW, MY QUIET LOVE, MY ETERNAL BEST FRIEND. I LOVE YOU.
