I love the tomatoesA Poem by John Fitzgerald
I love the tomatoes I grow in the garden of my rented back yard
I do not line them up and measure the ‘correct’ distance between them
I plant them by eye and they grow together in healthy competition for the sun
I’m a bit lazy about tying them to sticks, sometimes wrapping a leafy branch
Around the near-by fence, but
The tomato plants exude an aroma like life itself
Somewhere between perfume and pine-sol
Heavenly,
Green bursting Red
And their flavor
I can not describe.
