Chapter 9. Not really my favorite chapter..

Lucas and May were back in a taxi, on their way to the Sakhalin Airport, which, according to the receipts Lucas had found on the bus, was a giant Russian-Japanese airport. May had continuously called Dawn’s cell phone, only to find that it was off. Lucas grit his teeth, he was about ready to take her phone and throw it out the window.

As the taxi rolled into the city, Lucas stared out the window at the difference between this small city, and Tokyo. This city looked terribly dirty, and not very well taken care of. The buildings were a mix of Japanese and Russian architecture, and it was confusing. The smog rose out of the city like a dark green halo across the sky. Lucas was beginning to see the bad side of Japan.

The one scenic thing about the city was that it was by the ocean. As the road stretched alongside the shoreline, Lucas watched the waves rock against the sand, and he began to feel sad. He missed Dawn a lot. The sun had started to dip down behind the earth, and the sky was turning pink and gold. Mix that with the gray ocean below, and it can change your mood pretty quickly.

May’s phone vibrated again, and Lucas sighed. He didn’t even want to bother with her, he knew she wouldn’t care. When they arrived at the airport, Lucas tossed some of the coins in the purple sack to the driver and jumped out. He waited for May to get out and asked her, “Where do we go?” May still had her phone out and ignored him. That’s when Lucas snapped.

He grabbed her phone right out of her hands and threw it into the road in front of the cab. The tires rolled right over it and crushed it. Lucas didn’t even bother looking at May, he just turned away from her and said, “Find your own way home.”

Lucas started to walk into the airport, when he felt a hand grab his. He jerked around and saw May standing there, holding his hand. He glared at her and growled. “What? What do you want now?” May was a tricky person, if you thought she was mad, she couldn’t care less. If you thought she was upset, she was calm. She was one of those people that made you wonder if she were evil on the inside.

May smiled at him slyly and said “You’re pretty cute when you get angry.” Lucas was thrown off. Completely. This can’t be happening… He shook his head and opened his mouth to speak, but May cut him off by putting her finger on his lips.

“Forget about Dawn. Come back with me.” Lucas shook his head and backed up. He knew it wouldn’t do him any good to argue with her. When he turned away from her again, she grabbed him and squealed in a whiny voice, “Why do you like her more than me???”

Lucas forgot that he was a nice guy for a moment and yelled at her. “GET OFF ME!!” He shoved her off of him, and she stumbled backwards and tripped over someone’s pile of luggage sitting on the sidewalk. Everyone around them rushed over to help her up, but Lucas turned and hurried inside to the lobby, despite how terrible he felt for hurting her.
