Before I start this fishing tale I want to say, from author to reader, that I swear this story is totally true and I have people who were there who can vouch for it. You’ll see why I needed to say this later on in the story.
A while back a buddy and me were going fishing early in the morning. We met at his house and then left on our bikes to the river. We got there about seven AM and set up our spot. No one was there yet, but the river was perfect.
So we started fishing in our best and favorite spot. We had not luck to start. A few nibbles, but nothing big and no catches yet. A couple of guys showed up and took the spot we were in and we had to move down a little. We hated when that happened.
A while after that this big large guy showed up at our spot as well with a very cocky attitude and edged into our spot again and we had to move further down. Of course. “Have you caught anything yet?” he asked. We explained that it had been a slow day at the river. “Yeah? Well I’ll teach you how to fish.” he said with over self-confidence that he could catch and fish better than us.
He put his line in the water and we rolled our eyes. After a while my friend caught something. Just a small suckerfish, nothing major or good for that matter. Later on though after that we were getting kind of bored. It was eleven PM and we really hadn’t caught anything. We were going to leave but my buddy always asks for one more cast before we go. So I let him have his one more and decided to cast once more with him.
We cast them in and I let my drift. I thought my was snagged on a rock when I couldn’t pull it in. The line was down the way near the shore and it looked like it was under a tree with roots protruding over the water and out. I followed the line to see if I could unsnag it. I got halfway down before I saw what had my lure. I saw a giant fish in the water just sitting there under the roots.
I ran over near him and it swung its head and snapped the line and continued to lay there. I was not about to just let him get away. I snuck up next to the tree on the edge and jumped in the water on this big fish. I wrestled this huge fish onto the shore after 5 or so minutes of fighting it.
It was a catfish! I pinned it down and got a measurement then a weight on the big guy. He was measured at five feet and three inches long and weighed ninety-six pounds! That was huge! I couldn’t believe I had just wrestled that out of the river! Though he did get even and took a small chunk off my finger and it was bleeding.
You should have seen the look on the fat guys face when he saw that. He was stunned since he caught nothing at all. We did let the fish go after we were done. He swam right back under that tree again too. It was cool. I told a lot of people about it. It seems though, that I taught him how to fish with a fly.
