Chapter 18

Gone with the wind

The next day, it was a really slow day. I didn’t have anything to do at all. I slept in and just did nothing for like the first half of the day. I eventually decided to go into the under room of the cabin and take inventory on everything. I wanted to see what we had left.

I climbed down the ladder and closed the door behind me, so Midnight and Sheilla couldn’t get down there too. I walked around down there and searched around for stuff. It was actually pretty boring. There was nothing much down there any more, Just mostly the equipment that had always been down there. Not much canned food anymore.

I saw a log that had run away and gotten lost from the others. I picked it up and carried it over to the rest of them in the pile. I set it on top, that when I noticed something weird again, as I always seemed to do. It was yet another piece of beat up, torn and tattered parchment paper. So of course I grabbed it and then broke the seal to open it. I looked at only the title of the paper. “Secrets of the forest. Not to be seen by unworthy.”

That alone made my excitement levels jump. I easily figured out what it was. It was the ideas and secrets that eventually and inevitably got my parents killed. After a few minutes, I came out of my trance of thoughts and was happy about it. It was just in a list forms, but some had some sort of other language, but the most important parts seemed to be in English. It revealed everything.

I was quite excited, although a bit unsure of it though. I mean, my parents: lived in a cabin in the forest, owned an eagle, birthed me without as hospital, and were killed by people who hunted them. I thought the secrets may have been a bit much.

I burst up through the trap door and out through the front one faster than I ever thought I could run. Derek was sitting out there and I kind of surprised him. I held the parchment up high as he stood up. Then, at really bad timing, a strong gust of wind tore through the trees and boomed past us. The wind blew the paper out of my hand as if the wind plucked it out and ran with it.

I swear the wind was laughing as it calmed by the noise it was making. The paper slithered through the trees until it was invisible by the cover of the forest. I was shocked, but that quickly faded and grew into disappointment. I slumped my shoulders and lowered my head.

“What was that sweetie?” Derek asked. “Well, it was just the secrets of the forest that my parents had left for me. That really sucked. Damn wind!” I said as I sulked. “Oh, sorry, maybe we can catch it. I turned around and didn’t catch any sight of it. I turned back around and shook my head at him, and the thought of what had just happened.

I walked back in to the cabin and sat down on the couch. I knew I shouldn’t have let it get to me, and I tried not to let it, but it didn’t work. I mean it was something from my parents! And I was really irresponsible to lose it, especially in the way I did. I felt pretty bad about it too. I decided to leave it at that. There was nothing more I could do and moping wouldn’t help. I guess I would never know those secrets.
