A cove at Portofino

A cove at Portofino

A Poem by DrD

There was a cove near Portofino

Where neither tide or storm disturbed

And we would huddle before a fire

And watch the moody Mediterranean

“I sometimes wonder,” you said

Secure within my arms, pressed against my chest

“Were we made for this moment

Or was this moment made for us?”

And the answer was lost beneath the tent of night

Where sparks like ghosts of fireflies trying to be stars

Lifted from the fire and glistened against your eyes

“Are we selfish?” you asked again

“Seeing that there is nothing more than ourselves?”

And with that I knew the answer well and said,

“There is nothing more than you

And without you there would be nothing.”

There is a cove near Portofino

Where reverence dulls the tide to whispers

And ashes stain the grit and grains of sand

As testimony to a time that was

When moments were made for lovers

And lovers made moments remembered

Where they loved selfishly, ignoring life itself

In honor of something far greater

Oh, I really loved this one. The image of the world melting away and all that exists is your lover and your love. Beautifully penned and conveyed.
