RumorsA Poem by DrDYesterday Juan Carlos Rivera died He was the gardener You know, “that one” who tended The patios of Doña Margarita And when tongues wagged they whispered That Juan Carlos was her lover If it was true, I cannot say But rumors erode to gossip in villages like this Gossip meant little to Doña Margarita Because she is rich and sometimes generous So everything is said in whispers And each hushed word becomes deniable But yesterday Juan Carlos died And today he was taken to San Antonio In the horse-drawn hearse with velvet curtains To the cemetery guarding souls since 1596 It is the custom that mourners walk behind To the distant place of burials But today a solitary figure followed The wagon with complaining wheels And she walked proudly, chin high Glaring at those who peeked from windows That their words gave false meanings To a time she she will always hold as precious © 2012 DrDReviews
