There is such wealth in poetry and yet so many do not take advantage of what is on offer. When I mention to some that I write poetry, the look on their faces is almost one of disbelief:)To be touched by words is surely a wonderful gift. Thank you Freds for yours.

the tragedy is twofold I believe:
1) the pedantic way in which poetry is taught to young peop.. read morethe tragedy is twofold I believe:
1) the pedantic way in which poetry is taught to young people kills all sense of wonderment in most. the language of enforced iambic at a young age leaves them thinking poetry is an ancient language best left dead and buried
2) the curse of our modern times. The arts are generally divided these days into the emotionally visceral experience of visual (cinema) and aural which require little cognitive participation, or the more difficult metiers of written (in particular poetry) and stationary art (painting, sculpture) that require a mind to physically engage with the work and the artist in a deeper understanding of what it all means.
