candle in the window

for the son of a widow

now left orphaned, save

for a be-jewelled crown

whose issue once secured

now stands a former flame

for want of royal surrogacy

where an uncle once demurred

now twice an heir they found 

candle once in the wind

The son of a widow? How did the Masons get involved in this? I rather think Charles 3's dad's death is what is being referred to here. Also noted the nod to the Duke of Windsor, who ditched the whole thing. My take is the poet is no fan of the king, but rather of his late wife.

Thanks John, I'm certain that could be inferred from the way that this has been worded. Yet it also is laid out in a way as to allow other thoughts as well, albeit not as evident at first glance or reading. Glad that this review pointed out subtle references to other players in the scene. And by no means does the poet find the incumbent abhorrent nor blindly favouring the first spouse over all else, just that as the deck of cards landed the way that they fell. Cheers.
