Friend

Friend

A Poem by EvolutionMan

       FRIEND
I found the perfect friend today
mom says  i should have more
I really hope this one is nice,
not like the ones before.
Most kids laugh and tease me some
they wont help me up the stairs
Momma says it aint my fault
says,"god meant for me to be in this chair.
I've only had three friends so far,
and this one will make four
I met him at the rivers edge,
just the night before.
He dosent talk or move very much,
just stares right back at me.
But I know he's happy when i smile,
cause he smiles back at me.
Momma says  i should keep looking,
says better friends can be found.
But i know that this one is perfect,
cause he's always here when i'm around.
I'm sitting here with him now,
and were having the best of days
The sun is shining, were still laughing,
with so many games to play.
Mamma's calling from the porch,
she says i cant be late
She says its an important time,
for today i turn 8.
I guess i have to go now friend,
but i'll see you the next day
" happybirthday my silent friend"
til tomorrow...when we play.

Author's Note

EvolutionMan
I watched one day as a small boy tried to join in games with the other children at the park. No matter what he did, he was simply," too small" to be accepted. He finally came to rest at the far end of the playground. The look on his face was enough to steal my attention and my heart. I tried as best as able to imagine how he felt and what he might be going through. This is what came to form in my mind.

This is that one that touches me. Beautifully sad but also hopeful in its way. One must first be their own friend to be a friend to others. The uncapitalized i's are bugging me. I'm a grammar nazi.
