My Own People

My Own People

A Poem by E.V. Black

Daddy once said to me

"Protect your own people."

I ask,

"What is 'my own people'?"

Are they my flesh-and-

blood family? My closest

friends? My own race?

I say,

"What 'people' is there?"

There's only one world

filled with one race that

thinks they're all

separate races from

different planets.

No...I say my own people

are humans; every single

human on this Earth.

I'll protect everyone;

good and bad;

mean and nice;

innocent and guilty.

I say,

"It doesn't matter who

you are so long as you're

human and you feel."

I don't care about

what others think of my

actions.

Screw them...

I do what I have to for

what is really right in the

world and not because of

what "they" think it should be.

Everyone is all one people.

You ask me who my own

people are,

I answer,

"You are. Everybody is. We're

human."

And that's what I'll say

because it's true.
