Velvet Skies

Velvet Skies

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

The black velvet sky before breaking dawn.

"

Pools of water gather,

shimmer in the streetlight.

Wind whispers through short hair,

just a sweet murmur

in the ear.

Velvet skies

pure and rare

in my eyes.

In my mind

you are the

dark cover of night.

Velvet skies embrace

as I look up towards

their beauty.

A hint of betrayal"

it knows where I lie.

No one can escape it.

It’s everywhere.

Black velvet rasps my name.

Where can I go?

Velvet skies

pure and rare

in my eyes.

In my mind

you are the

dark cover of night.

Velvet skies hold me

as I gaze at

their wonder.

Shining stars"

twinkling diamonds

that wink at me.

In space and time

they hold a radiance

that cannot be measured.

Gems so bright

befound me with

their brilliance.

Velvet skies

sweet and tender

in my eyes.

You are the dark

cover of night,

the cloak that

shrouds the world.

Velvet skies

caress me,

holding my face.

The wind moves the

bare branches of the trees.

Skeletal arms and hands

reach out to touch me

as I pass by.

Here I feel no fear;

the black velvet of night

shields me from harm.

Velvet skies

tender and sinuous

in my head.

You are the dark

cover of night,

the cloak that

shrouds the world.

Velvet skies

overcome me with ecstasy.

Black velvet

caresses me,

holds me tender.

Don’t leave me now

as dawn breaks.

I am yours.

Author's Note

E.V. Black
This was written early one spring morning before dawn had broken. The world had been so silent that it prompted me to write of its ephemeral beauty.
