Night-Prayer Suffering

Night-Prayer Suffering

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

What is to suffer but to be human?

"

What is to suffer

but to be human?

What is to err

to be imperfect?

Hands clasped in prayer

over mine heart,

I beg the Lord to listen

and deliver his blessing.

My tears rushed

from my pleading eyes,

which were fixed to the ceiling

with devoted reverence.

I am not sure He hears me,

but it is more than the power

within mine self.

These nighttime sufferings

expand my soul and let me

chew on truly human thought.

I want only to be selfless

and, the closest I can be,

pure of faults.

What I realize is asking

for something that will take time.

I can wait, for my patience is thick.

My will is strong and

my ambition is sure.

Even as I close

my nighttime prayer,

I feel the suffering repair me

and make me whole once more.
