Shallow

Shallow

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

Never thinking or breathing.

"

The waters that I once

thought were so deep

are now gone.

Eyes open from

beneath the surface

and I slowly rise again.

I could have forgotten

how to breathe.

When I did,

the world was topsy-turvy

and spinning me

round and

round

and round.

Take a deep breath

and it's all over...

for now.

My lack of breath

plunges me into the water.

Here I float

gently upon the waves

of my own suppressed oxygen.

I lie somewhere

between dreams

and reality,

eyes partly closed

and imagining

something better.

Somehow I live

without taking the

deep breaths I need.

Or am I dead...?

It's something to ponder.

The waters ebb

and flow,

pushing me away

because they reject

my deepest secret.

Were I to never move,

would my heart still beat?

Some way my mind

continues to whir

even when I don't think.

Shallow here,

never thinking

or breathing

or even living for once

in my life.

One again, I can hardly remember what I wrote this for. I wish I did so that I could tell you, my readers, about it. It must have been back when I was wondering whether or not I could feel.

I can see this as being a piece of deep introspection. Very well written.
