The Friend Who Doesn't Understand

The Friend Who Doesn't Understand

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

She breaks hearts mercilessly and trashes them.

"

The friend who

doesn’t understand.

She is a person

who I thought was

a truly kindred soul.

Until today,

she was someone

I could really love

without fear of consequence.

After a mishap,

which, unknowingly,

tested her loyalty,

she jarred from me

and spat noxious words

at my feet.

Their venom dripped

into my ears,

like the will of hateful Claudius

towards the elder Hamlet.

The friend who

doesn’t understand.

She breaks hearts mercilessly

and trashes them.

A fair-weather friend

who floats endlessly

from sky to sky,

searching for a settlement.

Alas, ‘twas all for naught.

My thoughts deceived me.

Still, steadfast my heart

will stand,

defender against all perils

that rage upon it.

The friend who

doesn’t understand.

I hope you will

find some one whose desire

corresponds to that of your own.

Author's Note

E.V. Black
Earlier this year, I made friends with a friendly girl at school. We were friends for not two months when she misunderstood something due to an error in her judgement. She balked mercilessly and broke my heart. How could she? If only she had the courage to face me, then maybe she would truly understand.
But she's not a true friend. She has proven that to me.
