RiseA Poem by E.V. BlackIt grew. Past death. Past darkness. Past concrete.Concrete slathered the earth, purging soil into darkness. All living plants suffocated from the lack of light. Roots embedded in the ground withered. Petals and grasses lost their color. Everything died.
Before the concrete was laid, a seed was planted in the fertile and moist soil. Fed by the sun’s warmth and the earth’s damp cradle; the seedling consumed its fill. It poked its head from the seed’s shell. Then, the concrete was laid. The seedling was drowned by darkness.
Everything died but the seedling. Its roots remained strong. it grew taller, its head slithering up from between the concrete. The stone was strong, but the seedling was stronger. The concrete cracked and split open upon the seedling’s exit. Stone clattered noisily over the cement and the grass. The seedling kept growing. Its stalk rose to meet the sun. Its leaves parted way for the slightest hint of a yellow flower.
It grew. Past death. Past darkness. Past concrete. It bloomed. A flower’s head, wide and opening, to the sun. Even threatened by destruction, it stayed steadfast. The sunflower continued to rise towards the sun. © 2013 E.V. BlackAuthor's Note
