Lights Out

Lights Out

A Poem by E.V. Black
"

Once upon a time, the flames of passion burned behind your dark eyes.

"

Once upon a time,

the flames of passion

burned behind

your dark eyes.

The world was

an adventure

waiting to be taken.

You recklessly climbed

every mountain

without question,

sailed every ocean,

and trekked

every continent.

Your soul was fueled

by the beauty

that unraveled

in front of you.

Happily ever after,

you somehow changed.

Lights out

went those flames,

leaving behind a dull shell

of lifelessness and passionlessness.

There is no beauty,

no challenge,

because you don’t see

in color but

in black-and-white.

You will never again know

the elation of purpose,

the beauty of imagination,

and the freedom

to be whatever you choose.

You have locked your soul

prisoner inside your heart.

The years stretch on

endlessly,

and they sweep with them

the ominous sight of defeat.

You could have done more

to fight.
You are a coward.

It was easier to give up

and to fall at the feet

of Defeat.

Begging for life and mercy.

I thought you were

different.

I thought you were

stronger.

I thought wrong.

The first time I met her, she was bright with life. The second time I met her, it seemed as if she had bowed to an inescapable fate.
