You're in Black and White
The flight from California to New York was about six hours long, plus the couple of hours buying tickets and getting through security, but luckily for Hallie Harris her family owned a private luxury jet with a twenty-four hour on call service. Her parents were good for something after all. Being so rich off their asses that they could go anywhere they wanted at the drop of a hat. Right now it was nearly four pm, so seven pm in New York. Hallie figured she could make it there around midnight, if only she could drive any faster without killing herself. Also she wasn't sure if her parents were using the plane for one of their random rendezvous to Europe. They never told her where the hell they went, so she desperately hoped they didn't take the plane. Hallie pulled up to the security booth of the private airport, and the guard immediately notified Calvin, the family's pilot. "It's going to be about twenty minutes, and then we can take off Ms. Harris," Calvin said through an intercom. "Calvin," Hallie protested. Calvin had known Hallie for years. He'd been chauffeuring her and her friends sky high on shopping sprees to Paris since she was thirteen, but this was definitely not a recreational trip, it was an emergency. "Please, as fast as you can," Hallie said feeling the tears coming on but forcing them back. "Alright ten minutes," Calvin replied sensing the distress in her voice. He thought there must have been a limited Roberto Cavalli pair of shoes that she needed to camp out in front of the store before it opened, but he complied so that he wouldn't have to hear her whine. Once Hallie was finally on the plane and they were preparing for take off, she realized she didn't even pack anything, she just had her Kate Spade purse and her way too dressed up designer ensemble to go on a wild goose chase for Christian. Happy that she at least brought her warm Valentino coat she hugged it close to her body shielding herself against the chill in the airplane. Usually there was at least one flight attendant to wait on her, but since the flight had been so last minute Hallie would just have to fend for herself. She felt so guilty sitting in the plush airplane while Christian was probably grieving in pain about Derek. She couldn't believe it, the nice guy that she had met less than a few months ago was dead. He was only twenty-two years old, and even though she really didn't know him that well, she found herself filled with heartache. How could anyone just get shot in their own apartment without someone seeing anything? She was sure their place wasn't exactly security filled like her and David's condo, but she still couldn't understand how things like that happened. Even if it was a situation involving drugs, Christian never would have let his friend die, not without a fight, and so Hallie suspected that he wasn't even there during the murder. She couldn't imagine him coming home, just finding his best friend shot and dead. It wasn't even fathomable. She had no idea what she intended to do when she got there. Search the streets? Ask other drug dealers around for him even if it meant risking her own life? If that's what it took to find him, then yes no question in her mind. She unhooked the gold locket from her neck and opened it up. Looking at his photo doused her with a flood of memories, the most recent memories of him that she tried to do away with in her quest to be a good girlfriend to David. She became reminded of the look on his face when he woke up next to her on Christmas morning, the way she felt holding onto him as they sped through Old Folsom on his motorcycle, and during the confrontation between him and her father, where he took beating after beating to prove that he would pretty much do anything for her. For some reason when she pictured those times in her mind, she was in color and he was in black and white just like the photograph of him in her hand. She leaned her face up against the airplane window unable to hold back any longer, and silently cried soaking the window with her tears. He really could be dead somewhere, and if he was, then she would never have the chance to tell him that she made the wrong choice in letting him go. © 2008 Evil_Angel |
