GoodbyeA Poem by MaireadA Poem I wrote as I watched my grandmother battle against cancer and finally pass away on May 8th 2013.I sit beside your bedside, I listen to you speak, I watch with a heavy heart, As each day you grow weak, And every night as I leave, I smile and say goodbye, Trying desperately to hide from you, The tears welling in my eyes. I sit beside your bedside, I watch you chat away, Oblivious to what is going on, How we're cherishing every day, And every night as I leave, My heart breaks in two, When you turn to me and ask me, To say a prayer for you, I sit beside your bedside, You reminisce about the past, Talking of happy times together, As I hope this isn't our last, And every night as I leave, I say "See you tomorrow", Hoping with all my heart, That day does not bring sorrow, I sit beside your bedside, And watch as you sleep, So quiet and so peaceful, The only sound - machine beeps, And every night as I leave, I pause beside your bed, And place a loving kiss, Upon your forehead. I sit beside your bedside, I hold your hand in mine, I share fond memories, And wish we had more time, And every night as I leave, I say I love you, And hope with all my heart, That you know it's true. I sat beside your bedside, On the 8th of May, As you took your final breath, And peacefully passed away, I placed a kiss on your cheek And squeezed your hand with mine, Saying goodbye to my granny, One last and final time.
