A Poem by EverEmma

Pen    By: Emma Anderson 6/20/11

Blue pilot pen

That was found

In a messy desk drawer

That struggled through math equations

That pretended to do work

While really doodling

That made my untidy scrawl beautiful

That stained fingertips blue

That had a crippled top

That wrote poetry and new worlds

That liked to be held close

That would never be lost

That was borrowed by many

And soon demanded back

That became one with my hands

That tapped impatiently

That spoke words for me

That had a sense of humor

That yelled and kicked

That was running low on ink

That aged with me

That wept with me

That kept me sane

That said what I never could

That knows exactly what I’m thinking

That never gives up

That will talk to someone before I would

That has recorded things I regret

And some I don’t

Pen

What a lovely ode to a tool of the trade. It’s hard to say something nice about a keyboard, it is what it is – but writing, penmanship – that’s a real craft now. This has a lovely feel to it, the journey taken together, the wistfulness of times past. It’s just full of joy.
