Chapter 2A Chapter by Eve Valley
I couldn’t help but, stare at him. Derek looks around and our eyes met. It wasn't a good feeling, it was the kind of feeling that gives you the chills and creeps. When he looked at me, he grins. I felt the chills crawling on my back. “Ok, class since there’s a new student, let’s have a new seating chart.” Mr. Blackburn said to the class. “Hey, did you see that he was looking straight at you” Scarlet said, looking totally surprise. “That guy is creepy.” I repealed. “What? Hell no he’s not, he’s freaking hot. I even think he smiled at you.” “Ok, he’s a little good looking. But he just reminds me of someone and it just kinda creeps me out.” “Well, almost everything creeps you out since last week.” “I have reasons, ok.” “Hey, quiet down. Now everyone grab your stuff and stand up.” Mr. Blackburn told us. We did what we were told, and Mr. Blackburn warned Scarlet and me that we won’t be sitting together. Like we care. I’ve notice Mr. Blackburn is putting the new seating chart in boy-girl style, which is kinda stupid for juniors in high school. When I sat in my new seat, I got my unfinished homework out and trying to finish it. When I turned my head to see who was sitting next to me, of course it has to be Derek. He looks at me when I was doing my homework then said, “If you need help, and I’ll be more than happy to help.” “I don’t any, thanks.” I said without taking my eyes off my paper. He was still looking at me, I sighed “Really, I don’t need your help. Thanks though.” “Ok, just asking. Don’t be a bully to the new kid.” He said, grinning at me like he was enjoying me being mad. “Whatever, by the way have we-” I said, while being cut off by Mr. Blackburn. “Well, well Miss Eve. Looks like you didn’t do your homework last night.” “I was going to but, I was um, kinda tired.” I said to Mr. Blackburn “Eve, do you think that’s a good enough excuse?” “Um, no not really.” I said kind of nervous because the whole class was giggling, including Derek. Which made it worse. “Well, then you have detention for this week.” He said passing out work sheets. “Okay” I work on the worksheet he gave me and I only got the first three questions done. Crap, I know that I have straight B+ or an A- but, I never really have good grades in algebra. To be honest, I never had good grades in any kind of math. I look around, staring at the clock hoping that time goes by. There’s about thirty-five minutes left of class. I get out my folder and took out one of my drawings. It was a self-portrait of me for my art class and I barely started. Drawing is my favorite thing to do and reading but, sometimes I feel like a nerd or a geek. I sketch out my face thinking where I should put the eyes at, I draw the eyes then the lips, then my hair. I wish I had color pencils, so I could color in my brown eyes, dark brown hair, and stuff. Well I guess I could put shade on my skin but, it’ll look weird since I have an even tan tone. “Wow, that’s pretty good. It looks pretty realistic.” Derek whispered to me. “Thanks, it’s a self-portrait I’m just sketching it out.” I whispered back, without looking at him. “Do you need help with the worksheet?” “No, thanks.” Why is he talking to me, does he even know that I might know him? Well I know that it was just a dream, but still. I even feel awkward enough that I have to sit by him. Derek works on the worksheet and I notice he’s almost done, and he only worked on it for six minutes. How can anyone be done that fast and the work sheet has twenty-seven problems. I work on my drawing putting rough lines in the hair and on the eyes. I shaded around the eyes, putting texture on the skin of the face. Then I messed up when Derek whispered, “You need to work on the worksheet, Mr. Blackburn is coming.” “Whatever, I’m busy.” “Okay, I was nice enough to warn you.” The next thing I knew Mr.Blackburn was behind me, staring down at my drawing then at my worksheet. He sighed then whispered, “Eve, I know that algebra isn’t your favorite subject. But I see you didn’t even have the front page done, in twenty minutes.” “I got the first three problems done at least.” I said to him. “Again Eve, do you think that’s a good enough excuse.” I sighed, Derek grinning and trying to hide his face. “No, sir. Its not.” Then Mr. Blackburn looks at Derek sheet. “Look at that, the new kid even got his worksheet done. Good job Derek.” Derek sits up then says, “Thanks, at my old school I was one of the top students that had the top scores of algebra and other stuff.” What the heck, is he trying to humiliate me? “Oh, well done. I hope, that I can see good scores from you.” Mr. Blackburn said, then walking away to his desk. Luckily, he didn’t took my drawing like the last few times. I look at my worksheet, I really should work on it. I put my drawing away, then worked on my worksheet. I made it through the front page but, the problems are getting harder. There’s about seven-teen minutes left of class, crap I’m not even done yet. “Here, you can copy me.” I turned to Derek, handing me his worksheet. Why would he let me copy him? I was trying to ignore him pretty much this whole time. “Why would you let me copy you? I was supposedly being a ‘bully’ to you.” I said, this time looking at him. I don’t want to admit it but, he is pretty hot. The worst part is I feel my cheeks heat up. He was still looking at me, then turns his head to his worksheet.Oh god, I hope he didn’t notice. He looks at me again then says, “Lets just say that I’m too nice of a guy. Besides, I’m thinking that we can talk later. Maybe after school?” “Why you want to talk?” “Can’t tell you out of the open.” “Why?” “Why do you ask so many questions?” I open my mouth, then closed it. Because I already know that if I talk he’ll say something stupid and Mr. Blackburn will come over here again. “Whatever, thanks.” I said rolling my eyes at him. I take his paper, then I copied his answers to my paper. I feel stupid, I can’t even do my own work. Even the new kid helps me, well copied I guess. While I look at his paper, I notice his handwriting. His handwriting is pretty good, it has a mixture of cursive and print. Funny, how can I be impressed his handwriting? I’m so stupid. While I was finishing copying off his paper, Mr. Blackburn was doing a lesson. I wrote down the notes and drew little sketches of roses and happy faces. Class was over, Scarlet walks towards me out of the door. Heading for our next class. “Hey, lucky son of a b***h.” She said, while nudging me with her elbow. “Look, I already don’t like sitting next to him.” “What, why? If I were you, I would flirt right next to him all day.” “Well that’s you, not me.” “I don’t get why you hate the Derek so much, I think he's a pretty cool guy.” “You talked to him this morning?” “Well yeah, almost every chick in the school was talking to him. Tell me why you don’t think he’s a cool guy.” “First, he’s freaking annoying. Second, he’s just weird to me.” “You're weird.” “Whatever.” Scarlet went to her science class, I went to social studies. I went into the classroom, I looked around. Well I’m here early, I’m the only one in the room. I can’t help but, sense some kind a unpleasant welcome. I went to my seat and took out my textbook. Mrs. Robinson, my social study teacher, walked by me then said, “Good morning Eve, how’s your day so far?” “It’s good, so far.” “Well, glad to hear that.” She walks away, students start to come in the classroom. Most of the student went to their seats, some student were talking in the middle of the doorway. Christen, my second best friend, went to the table I’m sitting at. “Sup, Eve.” He said while smiling at me. “Hi Chris, did you did your homework for Mr. Blackburn? I forgot to do mine.” “Sure, can I copy you? I forgot to do the homework Mrs. Robinson gave to us, please?” He said while folding his hands and begging. “No, I let you off me all the time.” “Pretty please?” He says, blinking his eyes repeatedly. I laughed, he smiles. Then I get out my homework out of my backpack, and gave it to him. Chris takes the paper out of my hand and starts to copy off my immediately. “Happy?” “Yeah, thanks.” I saw Mrs. Robinson walked up behind Chris. He was copying off my homework to his, without looking up he said, “Sup, Mrs. Robinson” I tried to not laugh but, I kept grinning. Mrs. Robinson pick up his paper, while he was writing on it. “Well well, Chris, forgot to do your homework. Again.” While the rest of the students were coming into the classroom, they laid their eyes in my direction, looking at Chris and Mrs. Robinson. Mrs. Robinson looked at the paper he was copying off of. Which is mine. She scans her eyes on the paper then looked at me. She sighed loudly then said, “Eve, really? Well, I already know that you have detention for Mr. Blackburn so, I’ll let you slide. Although Chris, you’ll have detention too.” I knew what Chris and I were thinking, we’ll have detention together. But, I kind of surprise that Mrs. Robinson let me slide. I know that I already have detention for Mr. Blackburn, but she rarely lets anyone slides. “Um, sorry I thought that I could help him. Since he’s grades are kind of low in this class.” I said, Mrs. Robinson gave me my paper back. “Eve, you're not his mother. Second, is Chris going to learn anything if he copy off you?” Mrs. Robinson could be scary if anyone argues with her, but yet I dared to open my mouth and said, “Well he might, you never know.” She looks at me, then to Chris. She sighs, “Just don’t let this happen again, both of you.” She walks away telling students to take their seats. Chris and I exchanges looks, then he finally spoke, “Wow, can’t believe you got away from that. You don’t even argue with teachers, do you?” “No, I rarely do that, I’m Miss goody two shoes. It’s just that I feel something odd. “What you mean?” “I don’t know, just forget about it.” After a hour of listening to Mrs. Robinson’s lesson and taking notes, she went to her computer to take attendance. “Is Derek Smith here?” she said, looking around. “Yeah, he is, just not in the classroom.” a girl said. Why me? I just hope we’re not in all of my classes. But come to think of it, why isn't he here. We just had algebra together, why am I even thinking of him? Ugh, I need to think of something else. When I was staring into space, I was sensing something again, something dark and heavy. I was looking around the classroom, at first I thought it was Derek but, he’s not here. “Anything wrong, Eve?” Mrs. Robinson asked. I looked at her, she was behind me. After a few moments of silence I said, “No, it’s nothing.” Mrs. Robinson handed the class a worksheet about World War II. I worked on it for a while then, Derek walked into class. “You're late, its almost the end of the hour Derek.” Mrs. Robinson said, giving him a worksheet. “Sorry, I was lost.” he says, grabs a chair beside me and sits down. “Derek, your algebra class is down the hall. How can you say you were lost?” “I guess I wasn’t paying attention.” “Just work on the worksheet.” The class giggled well, he’s the entertainment in the class. He did what he was told then, I whispered to him, “Where you've been?” He smiles, “You were worried ‘bout me? I’m honored.” “Don’t flatter yourself.” He chuckles and went to work on the worksheet. A few minutes later the bell rang. I gather my stuff, so does Chris. “See you, Derek.” I said to him. “Bye.” He said, smiling. During the whole day Derek and I had the same classes, I swear. But, not violin/viola/cello/bass class. Thank God and yes, I play the violin. It was the end of the day I was looking for Scarlet, and found her talking to someone. I walked towards her, she’s talking to Chris and someone else. Crap, it was Derek, of course. “Hey Scarlet, what you doing after school?” I said to her. “Wait, I thought we agreed to talk after school.” Derek said, I ignored him. “What you guys going to talk about?” Chris said. “I wanna know too.” Scarlet said, I don’t know if she’s worried or shocked because, she didn’t get invited to talk with Derek and me. Derek looks at me, like he didn't want me to bring it up. Which I didn't. Then he looks at my violin case, trying to change the subject he asks, “You play the violin?” “Yeah, I’m in the honors club.” I told him. “Do you play good or crappy?” “If I did play crappy, I wouldn't play.” I look at Scarlet and Chris, Scarlet was giggling a little and Chris was just standing there looking back at me. “Then play.” Derek asked. “Why should I play for you?” He sighed, “Just play the damn thing, please?” Wow, he said please. Should I? “Fine but, just one song. I’m only playing ‘cause I’m being too nice, be thankful.” He grins, why does he like doing that to me? It’s freaking annoying. I take out my violin out of the case and I start to play Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven, obviously. I close my eyes, let the bow go across the strings. Once you play with all your heart, you just don’t pay attention to anything but, the sounds of the strings. The song sounds so sad but, it’s so calming at the same time. I open my eyes, I saw Scarlet looking at me. I could tell that she likes the way I play, she always had. I played the violin when I was a kid. Sometimes, Scarlet would ask me to play and most of the time she closes her eyes and listen. Next, I look at Chris. He sat down to the bench behind him and he was watching me. Not the way Scarlet did but, more like he was watching me more carefully and meaningful, I guess that’s the way to say it. I looked away, face being a little red and kept playing. I was almost done with the song, and I finally looked at Derek. He was the only one closing his eyes. I couldn't tell if he was sleeping or he was closing his eyes because he was bored. But then, he open his eyes. Looking at me well, let’s just say his eyes pierced through me. I can’t stop staring back at him then, the song was a few seconds away done. I finally look away and let the bow finish the last note of the song. And I remembered his eyes piercing me like daggers. © 2014 Eve ValleyAuthor's Note
