The March of the Skeleton KeysA Poem by Evan ClarkA songYour spectacular patience Belies a sense of inborn dread Thinking alone in a king-sized bed Visions in monotone Hear the march of The skeleton keys Coming up your church steps Go on and hide your head To keep from guessing
There's a certain tone to your honesty Like it weren't better than all of these Perfect little lies I've worked so hard to build
Defy... the stars to shine The sea to move, the sun to rise And stand... beneath the moon Keep the earth from opening Beneath you
Two sides of the same coin Can never be reconciled Just held on with copper welds Like living for yesterday Wash down the day With a fifth of reservation Leave your handshake in your briefcase And get used to disappointment There's a certain tone to your honesty Like it weren't better than all of these Perfect little lies I've worked so hard to build up So what if I don't know who I am? If you don't know who I am You haven't read far enough Just yet
So defy... the stars to shine The sea to move, the sun to rise And stand... beneath the moon Keep the earth from opening Beneath you And scream... the towers down Sew up your wounds to never make a sound And sing... sing for a memory Sing for one more day In the sunlight
When actions Speak louder than words Speak with your hands And move with your heart... When safety Is your best friend Abandon your lighthouses Lest they hold you in... When truth cuts all the deeper And sleep escapes you Use the day For what it's worth... And when love Falls to defiance Let this remind you Just what you're living for...
And defy... the stars to shine The sea to move, the sun to rise And stand... beneath the moon Keep the earth from opening Beneath you And scream... the towers down Sew up your wounds to never make a sound And sing... sing for a memory Sing for one more day In the sunlight
